Researchers at Mount Sinai are advancing new strategies to improve outcomes for patients with head and neck cancer. Translational research and an early-phase clinical trial, are exploring a combination of chemotherapy and immunotherapy—known as chemoimmunotherapy—to enhance the effectiveness of immune checkpoint inhibitors in patients with locally advanced disease. Early findings show striking responses, including significant tumor shrinkage and promising disease-free survival rates. By pairing clinical trials with advanced laboratory research, Mount Sinai investigators are also studying how immune cells interact with tumors to better predict which patients will benefit most from immunotherapy-based treatments. These efforts aim not only to improve survival but also to reduce the need for additional therapies that can affect speech and swallowing. Read more in the Specialty Report: mshs.co/4utHaUg

Measles cases are surging rapidly across the United States, with outbreaks reported in 26 states just two months into 2026. According to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as of February 19, 2026, there have been 982 confirmed cases nationwide. This represents more than four times the number reported at the same point in 2025. The most severe outbreak is centered in South Carolina, where the ongoing epidemic—originating in late 2025—has reached 973 cases total, with hundreds confirmed in 2026 alone. At least 20 individuals have required hospitalization. Other states seeing significant clusters include Utah (with over 100 cases), Arizona, and Florida, where dozens of infections have been linked to a university campus. Measles remains one of the most highly contagious viruses, capable of lingering in the air for up to two hours after an infected person departs a space. Prior to the introduction of widespread vaccination in the 1960s, it infected millions of Americans annually. The MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, and rubella) provides 97% effectiveness with two doses, typically conferring lifelong immunity. However, declining vaccination rates in recent years have left pockets of communities more susceptible. The overwhelming majority of 2026 cases have occurred in unvaccinated or under-vaccinated people. While most recover fully, measles can trigger serious complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis (brain swelling), and—in very rare instances—a delayed, fatal neurological disorder known as subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), which may emerge years later. The United States achieved measles elimination status in 2000, meaning the disease was no longer endemic. That hard-won achievement is now under serious threat. A virus long suppressed is regaining ground, but public health experts stress that the solution is straightforward and well-established: increasing vaccination coverage to protect vulnerable populations and halt transmission.

“What an astonishing thing a book is. It’s a flat object made from a tree with flexible parts on which are imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles. But one glance at it and you’re inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years.” — Carl Sagan
