Freedom of Money - CZ Binance’s book. Today the memoir of Changpeng Zhao (@cz_binance ) - founder of Binance - dropped. This isn’t a dry autobiography. It’s a powerful story about the freedom of money, protecting users and incredible resilience. CZ tells it all straight: from a mud floor in a Chinese village to 4 months in a US federal prison. The most interesting stories: • Freedom of Money - the core idea Crypto exists to remove middlemen, borders and censorship. Money should work freely for everyone. • Binance launch on July 14, 2017 The team counts down in silence: “Ten… nine…” They open trading - and immediately a massive avalanche of sell orders hits. BNB price crashes. CZ quietly says: “This is not good, right?” Dead silence in the room. Classic crypto startup moment. • The journey from the very bottom Childhood in a poor Chinese village, move to Canada, working as a burger flipper at McDonald’s. CZ honestly shows how he started from zero. • Funny and sharp moments - Offered Gary Gensler (SEC Chair) an advisory role at Binance. He declined. They later met for sushi in Tokyo. - SBF during the FTX crisis asked CZ for billions of dollars “like he was asking for a bologna sandwich.” - Gave an employee a bonus for reading important files in the bathroom - that’s CZ’s style. • The regulatory hit and prison $4.3B fine + $150M personally from CZ. 4 months in prison (the wealthiest inmate in the US at the time). He wrote the book there: meditation, conversations with cellmates and full embrace of minimalism. After release he almost got stuck in the US because of his visa. • The main principle User protection always comes first - even when regulatory pressure was enormous and lawyer advice was contradictory. The book is written lightly, with self-deprecating humor and honesty. CZ admits mistakes but doesn’t complain. All proceeds go to charity. It’s about staying consistent through uncertainty, making bold moves without perfect clarity, and continuing to build when it’s uncomfortable.
