Before you try to ‘grow your community,’ understand this foundation:
The 4 Layers of Community Management:
When you hear the word community, what comes to mind? Traditionally, it might be your neighborhood, a hobby group, or people who meet regularly. But today, most communities exist online and managing them has become a professional skill.
At its simplest, a community is a group of people who engage with each other around a common interest. That’s a broad definition because communities themselves can be very different anything from a small WhatsApp group to the fan base of a global influencer.
No matter the size or type, every community has four layers that make it work. Let’s break them down.👇
1️⃣ Common Interest
Every community starts with something people care about. Without a shared interest, there’s no reason for people to come together.
Common interests usually fall into one of five areas:
Interest – People share the same hobbies or passions.
Action – People want to make a difference or create change.
Place – People are brought together by geography.
Practice – People share the same profession or activity.
Circumstance – People come together because of an event or situation.
Think about your community: What brings people together? What do they care about?
2️⃣ Means of Engagement
A community can’t exist without a way for members to connect. This could be:
Many-to-many tools – Social media, forums, or a platform where everyone can talk to everyone.
One-to-one tools – Personal messages or private chats.
One-to-many tools – Following a major influencer, newsletter, or media publication.
Ask yourself: How will members interact? What platform or tools will they use to communicate?
3️⃣ Type of Relationships
Not every community requires close friendships, but some form of relationship must exist. These relationships can be:
Friends or peers
Colleagues
Acquaintances
Or even casual members who only visit for specific information
The important thing is that members feel connected in some way. A community is more than just a crowd or audience, it’s a network of people helping, learning, or sharing with one another.
4️⃣ Purpose
Finally, a community needs a clear purpose, the value it gives to its members. This doesn’t mean everyone has the same goal, but it does mean there’s something meaningful for everyone.
Community purposes often include:
Belonging – Members feel included, safe, and part of something bigger.
Support – Members can get help and advice, or assist others.
Influence – Members can collaborate to make a real impact.
Exploration – Members can discover new ideas, activities, or perspectives.
Think: Why do people come here? What’s in it for them?
📌Why It Matters
Understanding these four layers helps you build and manage your community intentionally. When you clearly define the common interest, means of engagement, types of relationships, and purpose, your community becomes stronger, more active, and more valuable for everyone.
Take a moment today and ask yourself:
What is my community’s common interest?
How will members engage with one another?
What type of relationships will form?
What value will members gain?
Answer these, and you’re on your way to creating a thriving community!
