The LAIRCM system is basically a mini CIWS for big, slow aircraft like the C-130, C-17, and KC-46. Its main job is to stop heat-seeking/IR missiles, especially MANPADS. It uses several sensors placed around the aircraft to watch for the telltale signature of a missile launch. Once it spots a threat, it goes into action mode. It system doesn't just release flares, but it also fires a concentrated laser beam directly at the incoming missile's seeker to "blind" it and steer it off course. It’s fully automated, so the pilots can focus on flying while the system counters the threat. It’s a fairly new and sophisticated piece of kit. 2/2

If the move not being coordinated with Iran is true, it'd be the geopolitical equivalent of trying to sneak someone in/out the back of a hostage standoff when the hostage-taker is distracted talking to a negotiator. Sounds very high risk, but I have my doubts: why ping AIS then?

🚨🇺🇸🚢Several U.S. navy ships crossed the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, U.S. official says 🚨🇺🇸🚢The move was not coordinated with Iran. It's the first time this happens since the beginning of the war

🇺🇦 Ukraine has signed defense cooperation deals with: 🇸🇦 Saudi Arabia 🇶🇦 Qatar 🇦🇪 UAE and is negotiating them with: 🇧🇭 Bahrain 🇰🇼 Kuwait 🇴🇲 Oman There is high demand for Ukrainian expertise in air defense, and cUAS in particular. These deals will be fruitful for Ukraine.

@denisewu This is not actually surprising. Especially since some may have been floating and some moored mines may have broken loose. Also, there’s a non-zero chance they never actually placed any mines and the whole thing is a bluff.

The IRGC geniuses have no idea where they placed the mines, so they can’t open the Strait of Hormuz. 🤦‍♀️

@JoeTruzman If I actually thought Vance, Vitkoff and comrade Jared would be at physical risk, I would be very happy to see them go. As it is, you should calm down and rest easy in the knowledge that they are all far too incompetent to negotiate a real peace agreement.

🦔A researcher invented a fake eye condition called bixonimania, uploaded two obviously fraudulent papers about it to an academic server, and watched major AI systems present it as real medicine within weeks. The fake papers thanked Starfleet Academy, cited funding from the Professor Sideshow Bob Foundation and the University of Fellowship of the Ring, and stated mid-paper that the entire thing was made up. Google's Gemini told users it was caused by blue light. Perplexity cited its prevalence at one in 90,000 people. ChatGPT advised users whether their symptoms matched. The fake research was then cited in a peer-reviewed journal that only retracted it after Nature contacted the publisher. My Take The researcher made the papers as obviously fake as possible on purpose. The AI systems didn't catch it. Neither did the human researchers who cited it in real journals, which means people are feeding AI-generated references into their work without reading what they're actually citing. I've covered the FDA using AI for drug review, the NYC hospital CEO ready to replace radiologists, and ChatGPT Health launching this year. All of that is happening in the same environment where a condition funded by a Simpsons character and endorsed by the crew of the Enterprise was being presented as emerging medical consensus. The people making these deployment decisions seem to believe the pipeline from research to AI to patient is more supervised than it actually is. This experiment suggests it isn't supervised much at all. Hedgie🤗 nature.com/articles/d4158…

I would like to show you the missile “shelters” that DoD has provided to our service members on installations like Camp Buehring. These are pre-fabricated culverts that have minimal rebar reinforcement if any. The last picture shows a concussion fracture along the top indicating it’s about to fail and collapse if it gets hit again. These will not survive a direct hit or a near enough miss from even Iran’s smallest ballistic missile. Within about 15 meters, the concussion alone will kill everyone inside.

Asked to describe the degree of fortification, he responded: "I mean, I would put it in the none category. From a drone defense capability … none." Asked if this attack was preventable, the soldier added: "In my opinion, absolutely, yes."

@emmamurphyitv @SKhatibzadeh @itvnews That's all fine except Iran has no authority or jurisdiction over the Strait of Hormuz. It's international waters and anyone can pass there anytime they want. Iran is violating international law.

Exclusive: Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister @SKhatibzadeh tells me for @itvnews the Strait of Hormuz is open to all civilian shipping and reports it is closed are wrong. However, due to mines as a consequence of the war, all vessels need to liaise with Iran to be guided along safe routes. “Anybody who communicates with the Iranian authority has got permission to pass.”
