I join my Jewish brothers and sisters in prayer on this devastating day.
In the wake of the October 7 atrocities, several Jewish friends shared with me their sadness that the Black and Jewish communities in America are not as closely connected as in earlier eras.
Those conversations inspired several steps, the most recent of which was to bring the Unity Dinner series to Houston earlier this month. By joining this collaboration between @HillelIntl, @FCASorg, and @UNCF, my intention is to catalyze dialogue, connections, and action in Houston, reigniting the historic relationship between our communities.
Today is a profound reminder of why we do this work.
Quotations from a few who attended the event:
Israel’s Consul General to the Southwest @IsraelinHouston posted: “We are proud to support events that bring communities together. The shared history and values between the Black and Jewish communities continue to inspire and strengthen us all.”
@_RWBray, State Relations & Outreach Director from U.S. Senator @tedcruz’s office: “We love seeing our great Texas universities taking common sense steps to fight Antisemitism. It is vital that all communities step forward to support the Jewish community in this challenging time.”
Kohl Crawford, @TexasSouthern junior and student leader: “I enjoyed sharing a meal and making new friends. I know that earlier generations of Black and Jewish Houstonians worked together for good, and this dinner provided an opportunity for my generation to step up.”
