The Champaign Police Department wishes to congratulate two long-serving leaders today, as they are promoted to a new rank! Patrol Lieutenant Sean Ater (left) is a 12-year veteran of the Champaign Police Department. His passion has led him to pursue certification as an Active Threat Master Instructor. In this role, Ater is our agency’s foremost expert on active threats. He has worked tirelessly with our leadership team to ensure that our officers are well trained and ready for the worst of worst case scenarios. He joined the Champaign Police Department in 2014, and was named a Patrol Sergeant in June 2020. Lieutenant Ater will serve as the Northwest District Commander. In this role, he will oversee both strategic operations and patrol operations in the area of our community north of University Avenue and West of Prospect. Patrol Sergeant Christopher Aikman (right) has served with the Champaign Police Department since 2007. His 19 years with CPD have seen him in many roles, including patrol officer, honor guard member, member of the Use of Force review committee, and as one of the longest serving Field Training Officers in the history of this agency. Aikman has trained our officeEditCaptionrs for more than 13 years now, ensuring they are well prepared to uphold the law with fairness, calm, and safety ever present in their minds. Sergeant Aikman will now serve as a front-line supervisor in the Operations Division. He will be responsible for leadership and direction of a diverse group of officers. He will be the first to hear resident concerns and complaints, the leader of shift briefings to prepare his teammates for the street, and a source of frequent direction to those officers on his beat.
