No one does it because the cost is typically exorbitant. In this case, if Pickens wanted 40+ a year anyway, then it isn't. Although it does negatively affect your cap in a substantial manner, different from an extension.

This is the way.
I think a 3rd tag may be on the table too, because it's STILL less than the average 3-year salary Pickens is likely seeking.
The individual cap hits and offseason work are the detriments to this strategy.

My takeaway from Jerry yesterday is they aren't really interested in a Pickens extension given what he will want. They plan to tag him next year too. And not even make an attempt for a long term deal.
