No austerity is greater than a balanced mind; no happiness is better than contentment; no disease is more harmful than greed; and no religion is better than having compassion for all.

Moral excellence is an ornament for personal beauty; righteous conduct is an ornament for high birth; success is an ornament for learning; and proper spending is an ornament for wealth.

Beauty of the virtue-less, lineage of the wicked, knowledge of the undeserving, and wealth of the miser - soon perish.

Water underground is pure; a faithful and devoted wife is pure; the king who is the benefactor of his people is pure; and pure is the brahmana who is contented.

A unsatisfied brahman and a satisfied king soon perish. A shy prostitute and a shameless bride of a noble family soon perish.

An uneducated person is worthless even if he might be from a renowned family. A scholar despite belonging from a low family is praised even by the God.

A learned man is honoured by everyone and earns reputation in every society. What so ever one desires in his life, he can get it by education. Education is honoured everywhere.

A meat eater, a wine drinker, and a fool are all animals In the form of a human.

O brother, if you really desire to be free from the cycle of birth and death, then abandon the objects of sensual gratification as if they are poison. Drink instead the nectar of forbearance, upright conduct, mercy, cleanliness and truth.

Those men who reveal mutual secrets to others, destroy themselves like snakes who stray into anthills.

Gold has no fragrance, sugarcanes have no fruits and sandalwood has no flowers. A scholar is never wealthy and a king never lives very long. Why did not one advise Brahma (the creator) to correct these flaws? [This shloka implies that nothing is perfect.]

Nectar (amrita) is the best [chief] among medicines; eating good food is the best of all types of material happiness; sight is the main among all the senses; and the head occupies the chief position among all parts of the body.
