The Lyon College Black Student Association is proud to feature “Blackballed: The Black and White Politics of Race on America’s Campuses” by Lawrence Ross as this week’s Black History Month Book of the Week selection. This compelling work examines the experiences of Black students at predominantly white colleges and universities, shedding light on the systemic inequities, social barriers, and cultural tensions that persist within higher education. Drawing on historical context, personal narratives, and investigative reporting, Ross explores how racism, exclusion, tokenism, and institutional neglect continue to shape campus life. At its core, Blackballed challenges readers to confront uncomfortable truths about race in academia while emphasizing the importance of equity, representation, and inclusive campus communities. Blackballed is available for checkout at the Mabee-Simpson Library on campus. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to read and reflect on “Blackballed: The Black and White Politics of Race on America’s Campuses” and stories like it during Black History Month.
