Today is 8 Rain in the Tonalpohualli. I painted this page in my Codex Cenyollotl to honor the tonalli of Quiahuitl, Rain, whose glyph is the face of Tlaloc, Our Lord the Rain. Rain is a sign of fertility, life, and growth, yet it is also tempestuous and unpredictable, as likely to be flood or drought as the gentle rain that nourishes the field. Quiahuitl is ruled by Tonatiuh, Our Lord the Sun, source of light and heat, who together with rain embodies the opposition and union of creative forces. At the top, a penitent appears within a nezahualmecatl, a cord that marks spaces of fasting. He carries a water vessel and a conch shell, symbols of fertility, and beside him is a ball of grass into which maguey spines are inserted, the instruments of self-sacrifice. Those born on Rain days contain within themselves both the Sun and the rain, and are therefore paradoxical beings. If they surrender to their watery nature, they may destroy with capricious fury. If they follow their solar character, and lead lives of contemplation and self-sacrifice, they approach light and knowledge.
