This year, a Change.org petition saved Australians almost $2 billion U.S. dollars ($3 billion AUD) in student loan debt. After Australians experienced a 7.1% increase on their student debts in 2023, Dr. Monique Ryan, an independent member of Australian parliament, launched a petition aimed at reforming the Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS), which governs student debt in Australia. The petition garnered support from over 280,000 Australians, ultimately leading to the cancellation of almost $2 billion U.S. dollars in student debt for three million people.
