So I do surgery on dogs and cats for a living. I don't think of myself as a vet. I do surgery. Just surgery. I was always a bit different from the other surgeons in our "small club" in that I always went out of my way to do pro bono cases to those in need. You know? Pay my dues. The other surgeons used to tease me about it, and sometimes took me aside and advised me in a more serious tone that "no good deed goes unpunished" Nowadays, about 30% of my cases are welfare or bordering on it, and most of the time, it is absolutely worth it. Saving a child's best friend, an elderly person's only company, or just someone's most valuable "possesion". But that "no good deed goes unpunished" thing really bites one in one's ass. An old lady brought her dog to me, knee completely fucked and the animal obviously in constant pain. She couldn't afford surgery, but because I really felt the surgery is necessary I offered to do it for her, not only under cost price, but I would likely have to pay some money myself to cover it for her pet. She still refused and now her dog is doing better (on pain meds). She now resorted to badmouthing me on the net because I was "actually able to do surgery at a far reduced price than what I initially quoted her". I am wondering if that is what made the other surgeons the way they are. Refusing to do any pro bono work and walking away from the needy. People suck.
