@jimfoley @OldNewYork1664 We are the oldest Irish organization in the Americas and our founders were Protestants from Ulster. Catholics were not allowed to join at first. We are widely credited with the first St. Patrick’s celebration in 1737 though some have argued it should be considered St. Augustine.

@OldNewYork1664 In the English colonies the first St. Patrick’s day was celebrated in 1737 by the Charitable Irish Society an organization that was entirely Scots-Irish (Ulster) Protestants. Founding members included Henry Knox ‘s father and uncle.

The Scots-Irish were not even close to the first to celebrate Saint Patrick’s day in what would become America. The first celebrations take place in Spanish Florida in the 17th century and the first large scale public celebrations happen in places like Boston in the 1730s, absolutely nothing in the records of Scots-Irish involved.

@OldNewYork1664 They were the first to celebrate St Patrick's Day in America. I wonder why they chose that and not St Andrews or St Georges if they weren't Irish?

With @RedSox 2026 home opener on Friday, April 3, sincere shout-out to Charles E. Logue, the #Irish immigrant from #Derry who built @fenwaypark back in 1912. Described by writer #JohnUpdike as "a lyric little bandbox of a park," #fenwaypark is one of America's most beloved landmarks. It is part of Boston's #IrishHeritageTrail, a trail of public landmarks celebrating the #BostonIrish. irishboston.org/2025/fenway-pa… #meetboston @FenwaySportsMgt @HelloGreenway @RedSoxFund @Derryvisitor

I don’t care how much billionaires give to charity, the existence of billionaires is why we need charities.

I'm on my way this morning to Dallas to do talks about Washington's Crossing. One for the McKinney Sons of the American Revolution and the other for a men's breakfast in Dallas. I gave this talk at Boston Suffolk University Law School for History Camp in 2024. I really enjoy giving the talk.
