Riley O'Brien debuted with the Reds. He didn't make the 2022 roster and was DFAd in April when the Reds needed a 40-man roster spot. O'Brien has turned himself into a standout reliever in St. Louis. He sends this game to the 11th.

It started with a middle-middle fastball in a two-strike count, and a walk to the No. 9 hitter. That's a formula to giving up games in the ninth.

Really nice outing from Graham Ashcraft, with the energy to back it up.

Huge strikeout by Graham Ashcraft. Great pitch against a really dangerous hitter right now. Ashcraft should probably go back out for the eighth. That leaves Tony Santillan, who has stacked together a couple of good games, and Pierce Johnson as options for the ninth.

It's an Elly day. After making one of the better defensive plays he has made, he hits a beautiful, perfect-looking homer. He got pretty fired up about that one, staring it down and taking his time as he rounded the bases.

He has made the jump throw to first base. But to get your body all the way around on the double axel to angle the throw to second base. Also a great turn and throw from McLain.

That's one of the best defensive plays of Elly De La Cruz's career, and it's definitely the best turned double play of his career. How did he rotate his body to angle that throw to second base?

Blake Dunn is doing a lot of things well. He's gaining some more playing time, and he's capitalizing on the opportunity as he plays the best baseball of his young big league career.

I was going through the 2025 Reds' roster between games. Nine position players have changed teams and been in the big leagues in 2026. The player who was on the 2025 Reds and has the highest WAR for his new teams in 2026 is Ryan Vilade (.7 WAR, he has raked vs. LHP in Tampa).

Ferguson, who has missed the season so far with an oblique injury, was one of the top lefty free agents on the market during the winter. In 2025, Ferguson was absolutely elite at limiting hard contact, ranking in the top 1% in MLB in average exit velocity allowed, barrel rate allowed and hard hit percentage allowed. He also got a good amount of chase.  He throws a lot of fastballs, a “big” curveball that gets a solid amount of swing and miss and a two-seam fastball that he added a few years ago has become the big equalizer for him vs. left-handed hitters. He threw 215 sinkers last year (his go-to pitch) and only allowed 13 hits. Twelve of those 13 hits were singles — left-handed hitters couldn’t square up that two-seamer.

Ideally, Franco should go stretch out as a starter. He has been up and down between MLB and Triple-A a ton this year, which hasn’t given one of the Reds’ top pitching prospects the chance to go through a normal routine and schedule.

The Reds have activated Caleb Ferguson from the IL and called up Zach Maxwell. They’ve optioned Connor Phillips and Jose Franco. Francona said about Phillips postgame, “He’s just not throwing enough strikes. We’re trying like crazy to work with him on the running game. He’s blessed with a really good arm. He can spin it. But until he starts throwing the ball where he wants to, it can be a struggle.”
