We released our assessment of the BlueCo ‘project’ on @bizzofsport a couple of weeks ago post the news of record losses and yet more fines. After last night’s Champions League exit (humiliation), the heat on this ownership intensifies. I’m a fan. What’s happening to the club is wrong. BUT as we talk about, I’m sorry to say this ownership isn’t going anywhere soon. That is nothing to do with stubborn resistance. It’s PE fund lifecycle, and the extreme and increasing pressure they will now be under to return for their investors. With no stadium plan, underperforming (being generous) revenues, and a team that nowhere near represents value for the £1.5bn or so spent on them, it’s looking like ‘a rising tide lifts all boats’ scenario is the only thing that will save them…and that is not good enough. Petr Cech on what he would do, if he bought Chelsea: “First, I would sit 6 months and watch, because I would love to know what is now set up, how things work. I think it’s a simple thing. Because you know, I give you a question. If I give you a soup and you had the pepper and salt, what do you do? You bring the soup, take the pepper and salt, put it in, mix it, and then you eat it? Or first you eat it and then you realise, it’s missing a bit of salt, then you put in the salt. You can choose, you can actually say, okay, I don’t care what’s there and I do it my way and then you can actually ruin it. Or you sit down and you say, okay, I sit down, I watch, I see what’s working, what’s not working, I make my point and then I will fix what I think it needs to be fixed and I keep what I think is working. And obviously that would be my first thing. Look, observe, see, and then try to improve what you think is there to improve.” (Business of Sport)

🗣️…they shake my hand and say “you made me feel closer to my club”. This is what you would expect to hear from a manager or player. But from a CEO, this is extraordinary.
