but isn't this puzzling? why take a course in the novel & not read any novels? surely there were other courses easier to glide through if one needed credit. like taking a dance course & sitting against the wall. however, this wasn't the case at Syracuse when I was an undergraduate there. much zest for reading, & a kind of hopeful "intellectual" aura there re. existentialism & exciting new ideas from Europe; everyone wanted to be a writer, like S. Beckett.

@JoyceCarolOates I had a course called Modern Novel in 1984 we were assigned: Proust, Brothers Karamazov, Madame Bovary, The Red and the Black, and at the study meeting before the final most of the students admitted they had read almost nothing. I was the only one who read Karamazov.

Really enjoyed this conversation. The humanities can - indeed should - be democratic. It’s a political choice that we marginalize them.

I'm grateful to @DouthatNYT for inviting me on his podcast to discuss the fate of the liberal arts and humanities in the age of AI. I hope that all those who follow higher ed and care about the liberal arts will listen. nytimes.com/video/opinion/… nytimes.com/video/opinion/…

For those in the Boston area, I'll be in conversation with the great folklorist Maria Tatar next Tuesday (5/26) at 7pm @HarvardBooks, discussing her new book ARACHNOMANIA (on the role of spiders in art & myth). Would love to see you there harvard.com/event/maria-ta…

I've taken to a very niche occupation: reading sections of novels that no one reads, taking time with background passages that professors who are familiar with classics routinely skip over. all the descriptions at the start of "Madame Bovary"--amazing whale minutiae in "Moby Dick"--most tedious passages in "Ulysses" (Irish politicians, old feuds)--almost hallucinatorily precise descriptions of landscape in Paul Bowles. knowing that NO ONE ELSE is reading these passages is a weird sort of pleasure. it is good to do useless things often.

@JoyceCarolOates I'm hitting the stacks at Nova Southeastern in the dog days of summer on weekends when I have nothing else to do. It's so rich! Just found out :-)

@brunellaism "a farm to build character"--v. Tolstoyan. Maybe the Russian had some good effects after all. (That said, the more Hobsbawm the better)
