Lake Norman Charter’s Destin Vongmongkol is The Observer’s boys’ high school athlete of the week. The Knights’ junior shot an even-par 36, to earn co-medalist honors in a Catawba Shores’ 2A/3A/4A conference meet at Skybrook Golf Club on March 30. Vongmongkol’s play also helped Lake Norman Charter to a runner-up team finish at the same meet.

Charlotte Christian’s Stella Spang is The Charlotte Observer’s girls’ high school athlete of the week. The Knights’ sophomore softball player went 8-for-10 at the plate with two doubles, six runs scored and four stolen bases last week. Spang helped Charlotte Christian to an 8-7 win at Charlotte Catholic on March 30 and 7-6 win at Charlotte Latin the next day. The Knights also lost 5-2 to Covenant Day on April 2. Spang is batting .609 with a home run, five doubles, two triples, a home run, four RBIs, 17 runs scored and 15 stolen bases for Charlotte Christian (6-2).
