If my loud American etiquette pushes you away... at least go follow my boy before you leave. Reading each of his posts and taking notes will make you better. Both in dancing and speaking about dance. (They are two different skills!) He's really a gold mine. But if you stick around.... i promise you'll grow. I dont say the things I do out of spite. Dance is what I hold dearest in my life... the people... the scene.... the culture.... I want to see it grow and thrive. I have given littleral blood and money for it all. Sometimes, medicine is hard to swallow. If what I say offends you, then that means you're the one who needed to hear it the most. Speaking concepualy is my specialty. So I hope everyone is used to lectures. Hopefully, translation doesn't butcher the next few months of lessons. Enjoy~

A learning opportunity has arrived. Let's talk about it! 🧵 Let's set some baseline statements. ● If someone finds what they like... that's amazing! you're set! Who is anyone else to say you can't Enjoy what you like! ● If we are dancing casually, the above rule applies. If we enter competition, then some variables change. The very merit of these battles is to be judged by experienced dancers. (there are exceptions to this) ● Dance is an artform. Art will forever be subjective. There is inherit bias when judging is being held... however, There are some "generalities" that hold true. This is dance Theory. This is the fundamentals of dance as a whole. Each style has it's own fundamentals, but, all styles share the same general building blocks. Groove-Flow-Musicality I'll go more in-depth to these topics at another date. Let's talk breaking! ・Breaking has 5 Fundamental pillars. To be considered a breaker you need a combination of these. ・TopRock-Go Downs-Footwork-Freeze---(Power) ・The "classic" round consist of the first 4. But the style evolves and there are different type of rounds. ・the classic exhibition or call out battle has 10 whole rounds! These rounds are sometimes 10 seconds long. It is common practice to specialize these shorter rounds to make them cohesive. This idea branched out to more standard sets. A round consisting of only threads can be just as dope as a classic round. Both Can still be considered breaking. ・A well rounded Breaker would have everything, but the level of specialization can be customized. There are plenty of dope rounds that are power only. There are plenty of dope rounds that are the classic. ・However, they all share the connection to music. At absolute bare minimum there is always a connection to the music. Even in rounds consisting purely of power, they are expected to be on beat. The more difficult the movement, the less dynamic we expect the connection to be... But still always on beat. ●This is the same with all styles! There is plenty more in depth we can go with breaking. But let's leave it here for now... Let's look a little closer at the original post. ・Musicality is a pretty deep topic. (once again... we will save this for another time) Luckily... it doesn't matter as a talking point here. Why you ask? Because our last bold bullet point is important! Being on beat is a minimum requirement for dance. Musicality is so much more then that. ・If there is no connection to the music... then some would say there is no dance. The music is being played for a reason. ・ If "Dancer A" Mechanically moves twice as good as "Dancer B", but "Dancer A" is ignoring the music. It is likely "Dancer B" will win. ・Yes.... even in power only competitions, though it might be weighted differently for these specifically ・It might be hard to believe for some, But all you need to do is watch footage or attend events. This is a common occurrence. Even among judges who don't put as much weight on Musicality as others. ・One of the biggest red flags for dancers is "Moves versus movement" (I'll go more in depth at a later date) ・A move is additive, but a movement can be multiplicative. You learn a "figure 4 thread" as a move, But learning the base movement of "threads" opens up infinite possibilities. ・As a funny antidote... If one were to say "but how many moves can you do" at real battle event... This is the quickest way to to get humbled by another dancer using only a 2 step. That's a classic maneuver. 😇 ●That was a lot wasn't it? I purposely left a lot alone, But I think this will be ok. I'll be diving deeper on a lot of these topics with their own dedicated posts. ●*Most* of this was talking generally. I wanted to use this Post as a springboard to speak on a few topics. ● But for the closing statement, let me be specific. The quoted tweet disappoints me. It's pretty egregious. I expected more from someone who shows such promise. Neldy is likely the most idolized and "looked up to" dancer in VR. Many people take their word for gospel. The quoted tweet has the potential to do legitimate damage if others take it for truth. ●I'll speak as a B-boy now... This is the whackest thing I've read in years.
NELDY🐺@NELDY_VR

Being a B-BOY isn’t just top rock and footwork. If you only rely on musicality, you might as well do another style. It’s ridiculous to criticize others for what you can’t do—so how many moves can you actually do?

@ptotto And people think i'm blunt.... imagine if they met MAX. 😅 There is a reason why we got along so well. I wish more would of had the chance to meet him. He's one of those one of a kind, world class players that influenced everyone around him. The dance scene is worst without him.

Mayhaps that's how it starts. Fact is... most people dont love music. They just like it, though, they will say otherwise. 😌 Is there any issue with such an event beggeining as Dj's self-satisfaction? I think that's a marvelous start. It can be frustrating creating a new environment. Its easy to become disappointed when only a few show up. But if the environment doesn't exist, then how will people ever join? These things take time. If only 5 people show up, then give those 5 the best experience you can. You attract more flies with honey than vinegar. Message me if you ever want to set things up. I'm interested!

@fly_cos You can beat him at your current skill level. You are a well Rounded breaker. He is not. All you have to do is pay attention to the music and you will take rounds. He can forcefully take a round... sure... but gimmicks only work once. Turns out dancing to the music matters 🤣

@coco_5kg That use to be my favorite break video. It's still very nostalgic for me. It was what my goal was as a beginner breaker. "I want to be able to Break to RnB!" was my thought.

@bddGwiqSsa59659 Before I got injured and had to stop training breaking. This video sent me down a rabbit whole of possibilities. Music genres are good for assisting training fundamentals to a dance style.... After that's been complete.... why ever restrict yourself? x.com/i/status/13330…

That's the japanese way isn't? Stop thinking in genre. Don't confine your dance to the music. Dance styles are defined by their movement, not music. [There are exceptions to the rule] Why allow yourself to be confined by such frivolous concepts. If anything... you've found what to practice now.

I wish this video could be translated for my japanese dancer friends. It's good to show respect to your teachers. But time and time again I've seen the idolizing of others go way too far. Be yourself and bring that uniqueness into your dance. Who said learning meant copying... is masquerading as other people Really that fun to you? Back in the day... The moment a b-boy bit someones flow, you were instantly whack. You have to start somewhere... but make it your own!

The majority of people in vr in both the west and east, who say they do hip hop, know nothing about it. As someone who comes from the birthplace of hip hop. It makes me sick to watch the term get so bastardized. The term girls hip-hop is doing legitimate damage to the dance scene as well. Moreover, Half the time I see a Japanese dancer doing an actual hip-hop... it comes off as watered down. I've been thinking about doing a wright up on the health of the dance scene in vr. I believe it will Garner quite a bit of hatred towards me,But I think it's required.
