In a seminar on “Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Schools” Shri Sanjay Kumar, Secretary, Department of School Education & Literacy, Ministry of Education, affirmed that schools are not just places of learning, but also at the heart of mental health care. In his address he emphasised on the following key areas: • Schools are among the most powerful platforms for nurturing mental health and psychosocial well-being. So, the teacher becomes the first line counsellor. • Capacity of teachers needs to be built in order to detect early warning signs of distress so that they can respond timely and sensitively. The role of school management committees in actively supporting school well-being initiatives was highlighted. • It was emphasised that the whole of government approach is essential -— bringing health, education and social justice departments together to support the children. • Destigmatising mental health and normalising this conversation across all schools and at all levels was stressed upon.   This seminar was organised on 25 March 2026 by UNICEF India.

The winning project, “AI-Based Cloud-Controlled Energy Saving System,” developed by Sunita Bhatta (Class X, JNV Dehradun) and Vishbash Singh (Class XI, JNV Dehradun), uses AI and cloud technology to monitor and control electricity consumption, helping reduce energy wastage and promote sustainable energy use. The workshop brought together officials from Union Territories to deliberate on the implementation of Section 12(1)(c) of the RTE Act, educational indicators, legal and administrative matters and the status of key institutions and vacancies across UTs. Discussions also reviewed utilisation of funds under Samagra Shiksha and mechanisms for strengthening governance and accountability in the school education system. Best practices and key initiatives undertaken by the Union Territories in strengthening school education were also presented during the sessions. Shri @sanjayjavin, Secretary, DoSEL, met senior officials from the Department of Telecommunications and the Broadband India Forum (BIF) to explore a structured roadmap for expanding digital education across schools. The discussions focused on introducing digital education in a phased manner, leveraging BharatNet to provide affordable and reliable broadband connectivity to rural schools and government institutions. Key areas included strengthening digital literacy, foundational coding skills, cyber safety, AI awareness, and digital financial literacy. The initiative will be supported through focused teacher training, strengthening of ICT laboratories, and close inter-agency collaboration.
