ERO is the primary component responsible for **interior immigration enforcement** in the United States. Its core mission is to protect public safety and national security by

⏺️ Managing the detention and removal (deportation) process.

Key activities include:

In short, while **HSI** (Homeland Security Investigations) handles broader criminal investigations (transnational crime, etc.), **ERO** is the “deportation arm” of ICE — the one that carries out the actual arrests and removals of people who violate immigration laws.
