Here is why shorts sound smarter than longs and get more attention: A long-only researcher can do endless work, but the thesis must stay simple. A good long case gains power from clarity and cogency. The more intricate it becomes, the weaker it gets. A short thesis is the exact opposite. It gains power from detail and complexity. Shorts pull you into rabbit holes, layers of data, footnotes, and obscure details. The rabbit holes feel like insight. “You’re telling me they changed the MD&A wording in the third paragraph on page 47 in each of the last three filings??” You walk away thinking this could be right, or at least this person is very smart for finding all of this.
