If I could redo it all over again, I would definitely look to work with Chelsea! They are pros and cons to doing a PhD in Canada but working with Chelsea will make it all worth it. Happy to answer any questions related to doing a PhD at SFU!

@NasuaResearch @carlyziter Yes, I agree with all of this. I did a postdoc in Vancouver and was only paid $50k, post-PhD! And as a PI, I only receive $28k/year from NSERC to fund my research program (salaries/equipment/etc). More support is needed from multiple institutions (govt, unis).

@carlyziter @ChelskiLittle Also, universities can ground truth their estimates for the cost of living and adjust accordingly. Vancouver 4 example is very expensive, and even someone doing 40-50K will not have it as easy. Maybe having companies directly funding Ph.D. as future labor can help. IDK.

So far only one applicant from within 🇨🇦. Not sure if I’m advertising at the wrong time, if folks don’t want to stay in 🇨🇦 for a PhD, or if I just have zero name recognition. But if you have suggestions for how to reach 🇨🇦 masters students contemplating a PhD, I’m all ears!

An excellent PhD opportunity for many reasons! (1) The research group is great; (2) SFU is a fantastic place with many ecologists and evolutionary biologists doing interesting research; and (3) Burnaby/Vancouver are very nice places to live

@awesome_ama Unfortunately, there are no tuition waivers at SFU as far as I know. It makes the compensation even less competitive.

@LJonasHamberg No offense taken. I was lucky to get a PhD offer in Switzerland and said yes for many reasons - the salary was among them. The compensation is an obvious reason.

@ChelskiLittle Because the compensation is too low to live on? For international applicants, part of the 'payment' is a Canadian work visa at the end. No offence, this is coming from a former international PhD in Canada.

@MiluElBarbaro Yes, I hesitated to tweet because I knew how it could be read. It's not that I prefer 🇨🇦 applicants, but I do consider it a potential problem if there are *NO* applicants from within the country. I want to know if it's something to do with me or evidence of issues in Canada.
