Leonard Barden is widely regarded as one of the most influential chess columnists in history. A strong master himself and joint British Champion in 1954, he became even more famous through his journalism and decades-long work popularizing chess in the mainstream press. At 96, he continues publishing a chess column for The @Guardian, as he has done uninterrupted since 1955. He also ran a daily chess column for the Evening Standard from 1956 to 2020, and contributed regularly to the Financial Times. This week we will feature some of his favorite puzzles, beginning with this position from one of his own games: a victory over Osvaldo Bazán at the Leipzig Olympiad in 1960.  How did White continue the attack? His column for The @Guardian always includes one, often drawn from current events, and many of his favorite positions have been compiled in books and anthologies.
