Javokhir Sindarov 🇺🇿 the Champion of FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 with a round to spare! Sindarov will challenge the reigning World Champion D Gukesh 🇮🇳 in the upcoming World Chess Championship match.
Sindarov had a comfortable 2 point lead going into the penultimate round today - all that he needed was a draw against Anish Giri with the Black pieces to seal the tournament victory. And he did so quite comfortably, holding the draw! Sindarov is on 9.5/13 points right now - still a full 2 points ahead of the field.
While there is a game to be played against Wei Yi tomorrow for Sindarov, it has no consequences on the standings- he is the Champion! What an incredible run by this 20-year-old Uzbek Superstar- first winning the World Cup in November 2025, now winning the FIDE Candidates 2026 - up next is the World Championship match!
The sheer dominance Sindarov has shown in this tournament will be remembered for ages to come - keep in mind that this was his first outing at the Candidates. Huge congratulations to Sindarov, his team and family for this unbelievable achievement! The future is young - the upcoming World Championship will have a 19-year-old Indian defending his title against a 20-year-old Uzbek.
