@FerroTV How do you say Gorbachev's price hike in Japanese?
English

@mikegalsworthy This is entirely due to the £/$ exchange rate. Chart of real GDP wouldn't fit your narrative at all.

@brainiac3397 @HirokoTabuchi I'm not defending him or saying he had no choice at all. What I am saying is that he was pretty irrelevant when it came to the major decisions. He was just a nice front of legitimacy for Tojo and co to hide behind.
English

@ChevronsApart @HirokoTabuchi That's revisionist BS. Hirohito was not a puppet. Even if his direct command was limited, his actions & support (or lack thereof in some cases) were considered encouragement of the actions taken by the military. He wasn't forced by the military.

Japan just *made Ukraine apologize* for stating history — that Japan, under former Emperor Hirohito, entered into a fascist alliance with Hitler and Mussolini mainichi.jp/english/articl…

@ChevronsApart @HirokoTabuchi Yeah buddy that’s where you’re wrong. And historical evidence literally proves otherwise. This was post Meiji era where the power of the imperial government had grown and they were heavily involved in the decision making of the war including the emperor.
English

@astoldbyada @HirokoTabuchi The Americans did want to portray him as a puppet after the war. But that doesn't prove in anyway that he wasn't a puppet. I'm sure he caught up in all the nationalist nonsense during the war, but ultimately he had very little de facto power.
English

@ChevronsApart @HirokoTabuchi Obviously you didn’t read and falling for the propaganda painting him as some puppet ruler forces by the military when members of the royal family of that time were involved in the war campaign and took part in war crimes.
English

@astoldbyada @HirokoTabuchi Puppets are involved in ruling in the sense that they sign off on everything and do all the PR for the people that have all the power
English

@astoldbyada @HirokoTabuchi Yeah just like a puppet ruler...
English

@ChevronsApart @HirokoTabuchi He was in the meetings, signed off on many orders and was involved in the military campaign. Only reason he got off the hook was so the US needed a strong ally against communism in Asia.
