Remember that Phil Spector composition There Is A Rose in Spanish Harlem? So often I have pictured that Chess Studio on south Michigan Ave where the genius Charles Stepney recorded, where young Minnie worked as a secretary. I can only imagine the wonder that filled Charles when he realized the latent potential of Minnie's voice. And then he must have set about creating the orchestral architecture, the pulsating heart via Ramsey Lewis trio, the timeless compositions that would be Minnie's vehicle of transcendence through the minds of himself and Richard and Minnie herself. She is the Rose from Chicago's Southside, its Harlem.
