Welcome to ESG & Sustainability Week. We started yesterday with a powerful session on “The ESG Project and Why It Matters to Businesses Today. It was an impactful discussion on how Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) is not merely a reporting obligation, but a business performance driver, strength and stability, and value over time. Through the session, we discussed: - The utilisation of data in monitoring sustainability and compliance by organisations. - The increasing significance of transparency and accountability in business processes. - Why ESG measures are emerging as crucial to decision making, investment and growth. - How analytics and dashboards (as are planned in our current ESG Power BI project) can convert raw data into actionable insights. One of the lessons was quite evident: Companies that incorporate ESG in their business are not simply doing good, but they are creating smarter, more sustainable and future-ready companies. Later in the week, we will get more specific and closer to the real-world ESG analytics, looking at the environmental impact, social responsibility and governance effectiveness using data. Here are 3 mistakes I made early on (and you’re probably making #2) 👇 When I first started in data analytics, I thought the hardest part would be learning SQL or Power BI. Turns out, the hardest part was learning how to think like an analyst. 1️⃣ Treating data like it’s perfect Big one I’d import data and assume it was accurate - no missing values, no duplicates, no bad joins. My manager would ask “Why don’t these totals match finance?” That’s when I learned: good analysts don’t trust data blindly; they interrogate it. 2️⃣ Focusing on tools, not thinking I spent weeks learning every chart type, every DAX function, every Excel trick. But none of that mattered when I couldn’t answer the real question: “What is the business actually trying to know?” Tools change. Thinking doesn’t. 3️⃣ Trying to impress instead of communicate I used to design dashboards packed with visuals. They looked beautiful, but confused everyone. Eventually, I realized analytics isn’t about showing everything you can do, it’s about showing exactly what the audience needs to see. 💡The shift When I started focusing on the problem, validating the data, and simplifying the story, everything clicked. My work went from “nice charts” to “actionable insights.” Pro Tip: Don’t chase complexity. Chase clarity.
