@omaha_wx I’d rather have a warning for an underperforming nader than no warning for one that overperforms

Good question. I don't really know why OAX opted in for a Tor-E. To officially issue a Tornado Emergency, all must be met: 1: Absolute confirmation of a tornado on the ground. As per EM, a multi-vortex tornado was spotted east of Highway 99 and Highway 8. Therefore, this was met, regardless of radar data/Vrot. 2: Imminent Damage. If a multi-vortex tornado is on the ground, it is going to cause damage. Especially to an 844 population in Pawnee City and 145 population in Du Bois. This equals to approximately 1,000. So, 1,000 people were going to be affected by this tornadic thunderstorm. 3: The situation must present an extreme and life-threatening threat to life or property, where standard, mobile-home protection might not provide the best protection and must be taken with extreme caution. As for this specific situation, a multi-vortex tornado does indeed present an extreme and life-threatening situation. 4: Population. Population does NOT matter when it comes to issuing a Tornado Emergency. A violent EF4 tornado tracking directly into a town of 1,000 people is every bit of an emergency for those residents as it would be for a major city, such as Omaha. There was however some radar data that was bad. Looking at the KTWX radar, there was obvious side-lobe contamination. Looking at KOAX radar, there was some side lobe contamination. I think @NWSOmaha truly acted on the report itself, not what the radar was showing. The storm was clearly in a favorable environment for significant tornadoes, which may have been taken into consideration when issuing the Tornado Emergency, but I wasn't there when they issued it so I can't speak on that too much. #newx #iawx #wxtwitter #severe #weather

Additional rainfall of one to three inches is expected through Tuesday morning, particularly across far southeast Nebraska into southwest Iowa where a moderate risk for excessive rainfall is forecast. A Flood Watch remains in effect for this area through Tuesday morning.

**STRONG TORNADOES, LARGE TO GIANT HAIL, DAMAGING WINDS, AND EXCESSIVE RAINFALL THAT WILL LEAD TO FLASH FLOODING EXPECTED FOR AREAS ALONG AND SOUTH OF I-80 THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING... THIS IS A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS SITUATION...** The Storm Prediction Center has issued a Moderate 4/5 risk of severe weather, driven by a high probability for a tornado and large to giant hail. Initial storms are expected to develop by early afternoon near the triple point of the retreating outflow boundary and cold front, and move northeast. As they move northeast, they will encounter an environment supportive for all severe weather hazards, including strong to intense tornadoes, large to giant hail and damaging wind gusts. An eventual upscale to a more linear mode is expected shortly after discrete thunderstorm can be maintained, with damaging winds and embedded tornadoes becoming the most likely hazards. The most concerning part of this scenario is the discrete thunderstorm development that is expected to develop after 1pm across northeastern KS/southeastern NE. If a storm can develop in the environment that is currently forecast, we cannot rule out an intense EF-3+ tornado which will likely cause catastrophic damage. The best chance for severe weather will be areas along and south of I-80, including the Omaha and Lincoln metro areas. Lincoln has a better chance of receiving a strong tornado at this time, while Omaha has the best chance of receiving large to giant hail (3"+). Best arrival time for storms: between 2-10pm. This will fortunately be the last severe weather day as a cold front and associated high pressure system takes shape across the central U.S.. HAVE A SEVERE WEATHER PLAN AND BE PREPARED TO SEEK SHELTER IF A WARNING IS ISSUED FOR YOUR LOCATION. #newx #iawx #wxtwitter #severe #weather

If there's a time to pay attention to the weather, it's today! Severe storms are on track to develop across southeast Nebraska after 2 PM, spreading northward from there. Our data is showing that the initial, more isolated storms have the highest potential impact/damage-wise.

@NWSOmaha You told me that the past two days. That I was in the highest likelihood of a tornado in the nation. It didn't even rain. You promised rain fall in the m Worst drought of the past decade and nothing. It didn't rain within 40 miles of here.

So sinister. Terrifying at first… but what we learned later was even worse. I have stayed quiet about this for 10 months. Last summer, Emie and her friend were coming back from fishing in Papillion. Just a normal hot summer morning. As most of you know, the Bug turned 14 today. With age comes a little more freedom — reasonable freedom. GPS-tracked freedom. On their way home, a man circled the block multiple times before pulling up and trapping them. He tried to lure them into his car. With incredibly quick thinking, Emie lied about her name, lied that both girls’ parents were nearby, and they ran to the closest safe place they could find — Dairy Queen — where they called the police. Because of those girls’ instincts and bravery, police caught him that same day. His bail was set at $1 million. But he is a trust fund child, and his wife bailed him out. His wife — a retired Bennington school secretary. A mother of two daughters herself. At today’s hearing, we learned details investigators could not previously share. Inside his car were nylon rope, gloves, bedding, pillowcases, sheets, and other items. When I heard those things listed off in court, my body completely shut down. I couldn’t breathe. I was dizzy. I couldn’t think. I couldn’t move for nearly an hour. I had to fully rely on my support system just to get through it. Then came the final blow. Because this is considered his “first offense,” this 62-year-old man will serve 50 days in jail and spend 25 years on the sex offender registry. That’s it. Even after a court appointed psychologist said that he’s at “moderate“ risk for being a repeat offender. Fifty-ish days with time already served. I am posting photos of him and his wife not out of hatred or revenge, but because parents deserve to know this man will eventually be back in our communities. I was told by court observers that while one of mothers sat devastated, his wife smiled, chatted, and acted as though it were just another ordinary day. Meanwhile, two young girls and their families will never forget this. And the hardest truth of all? It could have been so much worse. There is a very real chance I may not have been celebrating my daughter’s 14th birthday today. We are lucky. But we are heartbroken. And we are disappointed in a system that waits for a second offense, a third offense, or a tragedy before truly protecting children. This is my call for change. If you live in or around our area, please share this post. Parents deserve to know. (Kala LaChe)
