Tornados are one of the most destructive and dangerous types of severe weather. They are made of air that spins and rotates very quickly and creates a funnel. Today, you’ll create a safe tornado model. A model is something we use as an example. ow.ly/589f50YuOOp

March 20th is World Sparrow Day! The house sparrow is a very common bird all around the world. They prefer living alongside humans, and are absent from uninhabited woodlands, deserts, forests, and grasslands. You can spot them foraging for food on the ground!

Happy St. Patrick's Day to all who celebrate! Fun fact: "lucky" four-leaf clovers are rare. On average, they show up just once in every 5,000 clovers! There are also even rarer variants, such as five-leaf clovers, six-leaf clovers, and more!

Today is Pi Day! Pi (π) represents the ratio between a circle's circumference and its diameter, and starts with the numbers 3.14. Pi is in many mathematical formulas we use to understand the world around us: but it also shows up in some surprising places! ow.ly/WZMz50YsvYV

The spring peeper is one of the first signs in Virginia that winter is over. These frogs hibernate all winter under logs and behind loose bark on trees, waiting for the cold to pass. Then they emerge and begin singing their songs—loudly! You can hear them on warm, rainy nights.

Did you know there is an axolotl at the Lab? Axolotls live in one place on Earth: Lake Xochimilco and its canals near Mexico City. They are a type of aquatic salamander that rarely completes its metamorphosis into a typical amphibian “adult” stage—an adaptation called neoteny.
