When music class begins, they are sent to the library. They also skip art lessons that involve drawing people. The reasons? “Musical instruments are the voice of the devil.” “Drawing people is a form of idolatry.” At some schools, Muslim parents reportedly refuse to let their children participate in music and art classes for religious reasons. The problem is not simply that they miss a lesson. Every time this happens, the school must provide another room, prepare alternative work, and assign teachers to accommodate them individually. Freedom of religion should be respected. But is it really “coexistence” when families reject core parts of the public-school curriculum for religious reasons, while the school alone is expected to carry the burden? If you attend a Japanese school, respect the Japanese curriculum.
