Last evening, we watched Medina crack open a dead log, dusting her face and feet with fine wood particles as she worked. The most fascinating moment came when she extracted larvae from inside the wood and ate them, savoring them as a juicy treat.

From 7th September to 7th October 2025, we are raising funds to support the ongoing care and welfare of orphaned chimpanzees at Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary. Every donation—big or small—matters. Every penny counts. Every person can make a difference.

Thankfully, she was saved, and since March 2012, Medina has been thriving in the safety of Ngamba Island. She is healthy, intelligent, and a valued member of her chimpanzee community. We are deeply grateful to everyone who supports the sanctuary ngambaisland.org

Medina is one of four chimpanzees rescued from South Sudan and given a second chance at life on Ngamba Island. Her story could have been very different—she was almost trafficked to the Middle East, a fate that would have robbed her of the life she deserves.

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary had the distinct pleasure of welcoming Mr. Robert Joseph Walker and his lovely family for a memorable visit. The true highlight of their visit, was the deep connection they experienced with our closest relatives, the chimpanzees.

We were honored to host a courtesy visit from the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) and Uganda Tourism Association (UTA) team, led by Juliana Kagwa, CEO of UTB. Together, we are committed to deepening partnerships and promoting Ngamba Island as one of Uganda’s tourism destinations.

Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary is proud to join hundreds of conservationists at the 9th Africa Animal Welfare Conference, currently taking place in Yaoundé, Cameroon, under the theme: “Strengthening Actions for Animal Welfare and the Environment.”
