The Chinese mainland welcomes and supports more young people in Taiwan to take part in cross-Strait exchanges, a mainland spokesperson said on May 20, as a new poll shows rising support for national reunification among the island's youth. The poll, which was conducted in Taiwan, indicated that among young people aged 20 to 29, the proportion leaning toward "Taiwan independence" has declined in recent years, while support for reunification across the Taiwan Strait has steadily increased. Commenting on the findings at a regular press conference, Zhu Fenglian, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, stressed that the mainland will support more frequent interactions between young people from both sides, since they are the ones who carry the future of cross-Strait relations.

MFA spokesperson Guo Jiakun: There is but one China in the world. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. The Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. The two sides of the Strait belong to one and the same China, and this is the real status quo across the Taiwan Strait. “Taiwan independence” and cross-Strait peace are as irreconcilable as fire and water. “Taiwan independence” separatist forces constitute the biggest destroyer of the status quo across the Strait and the biggest source of disruption to peace and stability in the region. To safeguard peace and stability across the Strait, one must firmly follow the one-China principle and stand against “Taiwan independence” separatist forces. Recently, leaders and political figures from the overwhelming majority of countries in the international community has reaffirmed their commitment to the one-China principle through various ways. Facts show that opposing “Taiwan independence” separatism and supporting China’s reunification is where the arc of history bends and public opinion trends. Lai Ching-te’s persistent separatist stance and his true agenda of seeking “Taiwan independence” under the cover of so-called democracy has proved himself as a saboteur of peace, creator of crisis and troublemaker. No matter what “Taiwan independence” separatist forces say or do, the people in the Taiwan region will not be misled; the fundamental reality that the Taiwan question is purely China’s internal affairs will not be changed; the international commitment to the one-China principle will not be shaken; and the historical trend that China will and must achieve reunification will not be stopped.(Regular Press Conference on May 20, 2026) mfa.gov.cn/eng/xw/fyrbt/2…

MFA spokesperson Guo Jiakun: Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. It has never been a country and will never be a country. The Lai Ching-te authorities have developed a conditioned response of making every attempt to grab attention, which only time and again revealed their true nature as provocateurs and saboteurs of peace. “Taiwan independence” and cross-Strait peace are as irreconcilable as fire and water. Soliciting external support and pursuing military buildup to seek “Taiwan independence” is doomed to fail. China’s firm opposition to U.S. arms sales to China’s Taiwan region is consistent and clear. The U.S. needs to earnestly abide by the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiques, and take concrete actions to uphold the overall China-U.S. relations and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. For the 10th consecutive year, the World Health Assembly rejected the proposal on Taiwan’s participation as an observer. Enough is enough. Time for the DPP authorities to put to rest their political stunts for “Taiwan independence”. fmprc.gov.cn/eng/xw/fyrbt/f…

President Xi noted that President Trump’s visit has been a historic and landmark one. We have agreed on a new vision of a constructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability, and reached important common understandings on keeping economic and trade ties stable, expanding practical cooperation in various fields, properly addressing each other’s concerns, and enhancing communication and coordination on international and regional issues. The two sides should effectively implement our important understandings, cherish the hard-earned momentum, move in the right direction, steer clear of interference, and promote the steady development of the relationship.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun’s Regular Press Conference on May 18, 2026 Phoenix TV: It is reported that, on the evening of May 17, in response to President Trump’s remarks that the U.S. is against “Taiwan independence” after his visit to China, Lai Ching-te posted on social media that Taiwan has always been a firm defender of the status quo on both sides of the Strait; Taiwan, the Republic of China, is a sovereign and independent democratic country; and there is no “Taiwan independence” issue. What’s your comment? Guo Jiakun: Lai Ching-te’s latest act is just self-defeating, which once again lays bare his separatist stance and intent to advance “Taiwan independence.” There is but one China in the world. Taiwan is never a country, not in the past, and never in the future. The Chinese mainland and Taiwan belong to one and the same China. This constitutes the real status quo in the Taiwan Strait. By colluding with external forces to seek independence and attempting to make the Taiwan question an international issue, the Lai Ching-te authorities are the biggest destroyer of the status quo and the biggest source of disruption to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. “Taiwan independence” and cross-Strait peace and stability are as irreconcilable as fire and water. To uphold the one-China principle, one must oppose “Taiwan independence.” Any attempts to seek independence with external forces’ backing or by force are delusional.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun’s Regular Press Conference on May 18, 2026 Shenzhen TV: U.S. President Trump said in an exclusive interview aired on May 15 that the U.S. policy on Taiwan remains unchanged. He said, “I don’t like to see anybody going independent. I’m not looking to have somebody say, let’s go independent because the United States is backing us.” The United States has no intention of seeking war and he hopes both sides across the Taiwan Strait will remain calm, he added. The Taiwan authorities said on this subject that “the Republic of China” is a “sovereign, independent democratic country”, and its government will continue to deepen cooperation with the United States and ensure that the security and stability of the Taiwan Strait are not threatened or undermined. Do you have any comment on this?  Guo Jiakun: We have noted President Trump’s remarks. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. It is never a country, not in the past, and never in the future. “Taiwan independence” and cross-Strait peace are as irreconcilable as fire and water. To seek “Taiwan independence” by soliciting external support is a dead end. Cross-Strait reunification is the only bright path forward. The DPP authorities should recognize the overwhelming trend, stop burying their heads in the sand, and stop going further down the wrong path.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun responded to questions regarding Paraguayan President Santiago Peña’s illicit visit to China’s Taiwan region on May 12th, stating that China firmly opposes and strongly condemns the relevant move by Paraguay. There is but one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory. The one-China principle is a basic norm governing international relations and a prevailing consensus in the international community. According to a poll in Paraguay, nearly 90 percent of the respondents supported establishing diplomatic ties with China. This fully demonstrates that establishing diplomatic relations with China serves the fundamental and long-term interests of the Paraguayan people, and that colluding with the Taiwan authorities wins no support. We urge the Paraguayan government to change course at an early date, see where the arc of history bends, follow their people’s will, and make the right political decision to recognize the one-China principle.

Regarding the fact that the Taiwan side has not received an invitation to attend the 79th World Health Assembly (WHA), Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated at a regular press conference on May 11 that China’s position on the participation of China’s Taiwan region in international organizations including the World Health Organization (WHO) has always been consistent and clear. That is, this must be handled in line with the one-China principle. China’s Taiwan region, unless given approval by the Central Government, has no basis, reason or right to participate in the WHA. Due to the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities’ persistent separatist stance, the political foundation for the Taiwan region to participate in the WHA no longer exists. “To uphold the one-China principle as well as the sanctity and authority of relevant UNGA and WHA resolutions, China has decided not to approve the Taiwan region’s participation in this year’s WHA. Any attempt to play the ‘Taiwan card’ for political manipulation in defiance of the one-China principle is doomed to fail.” Guo Jiakun said.
