#VPDNews: Vancouver Police are releasing the photo of a suspect in a series of stranger assaults against women in the downtown core. Police are asking anyone with information to come forward. VPD initiated an investigation on January 29, 2025, after a 44-year-old woman was assaulted by a man she didn’t know while walking near Granville and Dunsmuir Street. Over the course of several months, at least three other women reported being assaulted by a man with a similar description. Each incident allegedly involved the suspect elbowing or shoulder-checking the victims while passing them on downtown sidewalks – in some cases knocking them to the ground. The VPD investigation led police to a 28-year-old man, who was arrested March 5 by investigators from VPD’s Special Investigation Section, with assistance from patrol officers in the downtown core. Dylan Brandon Gaita has now been charged with four counts of assault that allegedly occurred between January 29, 2025, and January 31, 2026. “Unprovoked violence against strangers is an ongoing concern for everyone, and we know that sometimes these incidents are not immediately reported to police,” says Constable Megan Lui. “Although we’ve made an arrest in these cases, there may still be additional victims, witnesses, or people with information. That is why we’ve chosen to release the suspect’s photo, and ask anyone who has not yet come forward to contact police.”

#VPDNews: VPD officers working in the Downtown Eastside have helped re-unite a stolen high-end bicycle with its owner, after the bike was taken during a residential break-and-enter in North Vancouver last week. A VPD Special Municipal Constable was patrolling near the Vancouver Jail, at Main and East Cordova Street, on March 6 when he spotted two suspicious people with a valuable Specialized road bike. The SMC stopped to speak with the people, who were unable to explain where they got the bike or what they were doing with it. Although it hadn’t yet been reported stolen and wasn’t registered with Project 529, the heads-up Special Municipal Constable contacted a Specialized retailer, provided the bike’s serial number, and learned that the people in possession of the bike weren’t the ones that bought it. After making several more phone calls, the SMC tracked down the rightful owner, who was unaware that the bike had been stolen that week from their residence near Cates Park in North Vancouver. “While we’re thrilled to have recovered this bike and are now in the process of returning it, most cases like this don’t have such a happy ending,” says Constable Megan Lui. “We recommend all cyclists register their bikes with Project 529 as an additional security measure to prevent theft, and to help police track their owners when bikes are stolen.” The bike is now in the process of being returned to its owner.

#VPDNews: Vancouver Police are making people aware of a unique method that thieves are using to break in to homes. Between August 9 and December 24, 2025, ten apartment units spread across five residential apartment buildings in Vancouver, and one building in Burnaby, were targeted. “The suspects would gain entry into the building during the middle of the night and apply hot glue in the top corner of apartment unit doors, stretching it between the door and the frame,” says VPD Property Crime Sergeant Stan Dy. “When building residents returned home and opened the door, the strand of glue was broken. If the residents were away, the strand of glue stayed intact, indicating that no one was home. The suspects then returned within a few days and broke into suites that had intact glue.” It is believed that the suspects targeted older apartment buildings with limited security measures. which may include insecure stairwell doors or buildings that lack security cameras. Similar cases involving suspects using glue on unit doors through apartment buildings have been reported in Ontario and Edmonton. #VPDNews: Two suspects have been charged following a Vancouver Police investigation at a retail store in East Vancouver. Vancouver Police responded at 8:38 a.m. on February 2 to a report of a robbery near Glen Drive and Terminal Avenue. A loss prevention officer was allegedly assaulted with bear-spray by two men who were attempting to escape on foot with unpaid merchandise. An extensive area search was conducted by police with the assistance of a police-piloted drone and canine unit. Two suspects were located and arrested in the Strathcona neighbourhood near Maclean Park. Damian Derby, 30, and Cordell Peters, 28, have each been charged with one count of assault with a weapon and one count of theft under $5000. Both accused remain in custody.

#VPDNews: Vancouver Police are investigating after a teenager was seriously injured in a stabbing following a high school basketball game at Eric Hamber Secondary Monday night. The assault occurred shortly after 9 p.m., as a game between the Eric Hamber and Killarney Secondary basketball teams was concluding. Police believe fights broke out between spectators, resulting in an 18-year-old boy being stabbed in the arm. The stabbing victim was taken to hospital and received medical treatment. No arrests have been made. Police are asking anyone who took cell phone video during the fight, or while the game was taking place, to submit video online. A web portal has been created for submissions. Witnesses, or anyone with information who has not yet come forward, can also contact VPD’s Youth Investigative Unit at 604-717-0614. Additional school liaison officers are being deployed to both schools. They will provide additional support and conduct safety planning with staff and administrators.

#VPDNews: A 13-year-old has been arrested by Vancouver Police for allegedly stealing a $1,200 jacket from a high-end luxury store downtown with a replica firearm strapped to his leg. VPD officers responded around 6:15 p.m. on Tuesday to reports that security had a suspect pinned to the ground with a gun strapped to his leg outside the store, located near Granville and Dunsmuir. Police arrived on scene, arrested the teen, and secured the replica firearm. The 13-year-old, a Surrey resident, has been released into the custody of a parent. The investigation is ongoing.

#VPDNews: Vancouver Police have made an arrest in connection with a fatal stabbing that occurred in East Vancouver on January 20. A 22-year-old Vancouver man was arrested on January 24 for the fatal stabbing of 48-year-old Christopher Jumal Sanderson. The suspect was taken into custody on January 24 by the Vancouver Police. The arrest was made following the execution of a search warrant at a home near Commercial Drive and East 13th Avenue on January 24. Quoc The Cathedral Dang has now been charged with one count of second-degree murder. Dang remains in custody.

#VPDNews: Vancouver Police are investigating the city’s first homicide of 2026, after a man was stabbed near East 10th Avenue and Commercial Drive on Tuesday evening. Vancouver Police responded at 8:40 p.m. on January 20 for reports that a man had been stabbed. The victim was transported to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The victim has been identified as 48-year-old Christopher Jumal Sanderson. No arrests have been made. Anyone with information is asked to contact VPD’s Homicide Section at 604-717-2541.

#VPDNews: Vancouver Police were walking the beat in the Downtown Eastside last night when they were flagged down by someone reporting a man inside the West Hotel acting erratically with a firearm. The officers entered the hotel and conducted a search for the suspect, who was taken into custody after a brief struggle. A pistol and a loaded bb gun were seized, and the suspect was taken to jail.

#VPDNews: A suspect has been charged with assault causing bodily harm after allegedly punching a fast-food cook who wouldn’t give him a free add-on to his burger. At approximately at 7:05 p.m. on January 12, a 23-year-old man was working at a fast-food restaurant on Granville Street when a customer allegedly wanted free bacon added to his burger. When told that he’d have to pay for the add-on, the suspect allegedly went behind the counter, into the kitchen, and punched the cook in the face. The worker sustained a serious facial injury that required medical attention. The suspect fled, but was chased by another staff member and arrested outside the restaurant by members of the Vancouver Police Metro Team, which was in the area for an unrelated incident. The BC Prosecution Service has now charged 24-year-old Jaxon Andre Carter with one count of assault causing bodily harm.

#VPDNews: Dean Robert Merrick was wanted Canada-wide for failing to return to his halfway house, was recognized by a citizen who reported him to police. Vancouver Police soon located Merrick and he is currently in custody.

#VPDNews: Vancouver Police are investigating a hit-and-run collision that resulted in the death of an 81-year-old pedestrian in East Vancouver early this morning. Police and BC Emergency Health Services responded just after 6:30 a.m. to reports that a woman had been struck by a car on Rupert Street, near Euclid Avenue. The driver did not stop and the car was last seen heading north on Rupert Street. The victim died from her injuries before being transported to hospital. Investigators believe the hit-and-run vehicle is a dark grey Volkswagen Golf manufactured in the late 1990s or early 2000s. As a result of the collision, the vehicle is missing the driver-side mirror, and may have damage on the driver-side front bumper, headlight, and front fender. Anyone with information about the driver or vehicle involved, or anyone with dash-cam or security video from Rupert Street, between Kingsway and East 29th Avenue, is asked to contact investigators at 604-717-3012 or vpdciu@vpd.ca.

#VPDNews: A Vancouver Police investigation has led to the arrest of a suspect, who has now been charged with second-degree murder in the alleged homicide of a Downtown Eastside resident two weeks ago. VPD’s Homicide Unit initiated an investigation on November 28, after the 45-year-old victim was assaulted by a stranger near Gore and Powell Street around 3 a.m. Following a two-week investigation, police identified and located a suspect, who was arrested Sunday evening near Main Street and Terminal Avenue by VPD. Korey Robert Muskett, 33, has now been charged with the second-degree murder of Mark Andrew Roasa. Muskett remains in custody.

Detectives investigating a sexual assault in which a woman was forcibly confined and strangled, found cameras set up inside the home. The woman’s abuser used the cameras to see and control who visited the house. He also forcefully took her phone to prevent her from calling anyone. The woman was afraid he would kill her or her family if she did not obey his wishes. The man was arrested and is facing charges.
