在日本住久了，有一个很深的感触：这里的城市道路像毛细血管一样通畅，格子状的街区几乎没有“断头路”，所以很少堵车。 我问了熟悉中国的美国和英国的朋友，他们都说英语里根本没有“住宅小区”这个概念。最接近的词是 residential complex（住宅群）或 gated community（封闭社区），但这在他们国家都不是主流。 日本也是一样。日语里只有「団地」（だんち）（大型集合住宅区），或者「住宅地」。但它们的道路都是开放的，属于城市的一部分。没有哪栋楼被围墙圈起来，把街道拦腰斩断。 反观中国，“小区”几乎成了标配：高墙林立，门岗把守，内部道路不对外开放。于是，一条条本应通畅的街道，被切成一块块“孤岛”。 为什么会这样？答案是：苏联模式的遗产。上世纪五十年代，中国照抄苏联的“居住区制”（microdistrict），把住宅、商店、学校、绿地都圈进一个封闭大院，和外部社会隔绝。 后来单位大院没了，但房地产开发商继续延续这套模式，换个名字叫“小区”。于是，苏联的影子一直伴随着中国各个城市。 城市，本该是开放的有机体。你信你看纽约、洛杉矶、东京的地图，都是网格化的街区，但在中国，却被割裂成一块块小围城。居民出不去，车流走不通，城市喘不过气。 当我走在京都的街道上，看到纵横交错的格子路网时，不禁感慨：这才是真正的现代城市；而中国的小区，其实是苏联留下的“围城”，不堵车才怪！
