AI data centers are putting new demands on networking technology. In one corner: Copper, low-cost upfront and cheap to operate for short-runs given low energy consumption, but it doesn't work for longer-runs due to signal degradation. In the other corner: Optical, high upfront costs and higher energy consumption for short-runs, but ability to transfer massive amounts of data and no signal degradation over longer-runs within the data center. But an ideal trade-off technology sitting between traditional copper and optical is coming. MicroLED is being developed by Credo Technology $CRDO, Marvell Technology $MRVL, and a co-development agreement between MediaTek $2454 and Microsoft $MSFT.
