One reason I have been very passionate about educating consumers regarding the precious metals industry, since I created my depository company in 2008, was the completely unregulated nature that surrounds the retail dealer and depository industry. A 2014 investigation and investigative report published by the Senate Special Committee on Aging, conservatively estimated that more than 10,000 Americans have been victimized through schemes used by the precious metals industry, with losses around $300 million. This is 2014 numbers. Imagine how much that number has grown to today? The schemes and marketing have only gotten more sophisticated by using technology, misleading information, puffery, and other forms of advertising to lure in its next customer. This post is not about a competitor trying to downplay the industry to promote himself. In fact, I post here for absolutely free with the purpose of not wanting to see consumers and investors be taken advantage of. Unfortunately, many large online and corporate dealers have disrupted the previous model of older dealers providing value to customers in exchange for loyalty and relationships. This new breed of dealer, focuses on revenue and margins to grab market share and enrich its principals. The consumer pays high premiums or gets big discounts when selling back. This provides more money to this new dealer model to market to unsuspecting consumers and keep the loop going. I have supported local dealers. Many of which are more knowledgeable about the history of the products they sell.
