This Burnham campaign video deserves a retweet (and many more). Take a look at the vast (shady) money and professional media operation behind Reform. It’s going to be an existential battle.Wherever you stand on the Labour leadership, this seat must be won.

@Thelma_DWalker Listen I lent my vote to the greens to their victory here in Gorton, only because Andy was refused. Won’t happen next election after seeing all the negative Green supporters , nasty and vile!

I will accept the democratic decision of the Green Party as to whether or not we fight to win in Makerfield, but I do remember very well how vile Labour were during the Gorton and Denton by election, when they could have stepped back and given the Greens a clear run.

@BladeoftheS Wrong attitude, I give my vote to the greens in Gorton because Andy was blocked. I won’t do that next time with that attitude

I hope the Green Party go and win this one just like Gorton and Denton and spank Reform and Labour. Then I hope they take Manchester Mayor as well. We don't need to HOPE other people do something. The Green Party need to do it themselves.
Caroline Lucas@CarolineLucas

I hope this isn’t true. There are times when it’s more important to put country before party. This is one of them. Burnham’s longstanding commitment to a fairer voting system could transform our democracy & counter dire threat of a Reform UK government theguardian.com/politics/2026/…

Changed my mind. Think the Greens should contest the by-election as fully as Gorton and go for the win if possible. No stepping aside, no deals with Burnham. Absolute death of trust with voters to make any deal with Labour or be seen to be collaborating with them.

I’m furious. So much so I almost want Burnham to lose in Wigan, something I could never have imagined saying. These bastards that ignore the wishes of @UKLabour membership, fail to maintain the party line, and display such disloyalty deserve nothing more. They need teaching a lesson. I hope @The_TUC are listening too. They should not be allowed to ride roughshod over the rank and file. And all about a poor result in midterm local elections in the face of unprecedented media attacks on Starmer, despite the progress made in just 22 months. Outrageous. #StandWithStarner

How many of my followers are disgusted with an actual Labour MP deserting his constituents and costing taxpayers money for an egotistical man, a twice previous loser of the Labour Leadership vote, to maybe win back the seat the Labour MP threw away?

Burnham is not a left wing politician. His politics is the same as Starmer’s. Yes he’s more popular, but he’s no better.

@Kevin_Maguire You obviously don’t live under Burnham in Gtr Mcr with his stupid ideas & increased council tax. Westminster can have him & we may get a decent Mayor here, but, be careful what you wish for as a PM, he’s a 🤡🤬. Good riddance ….💪🏻🇬🇧

@siennamarla @ZackPolanski Zack. I supported you in Gorton and Denton because Andy was declined to stand, and I did not want reform. If you stand a candidate against Andy now it will be a reform victory, you know it so stand down here. Many of us give our votes to you in Gorton.

Zack Polanski on Andy Burnham: “Last week’s elections shows the country is crying out for a break from the failed status quo. Keir Starmer has been unable and unwilling to break with an economic model that has fuelled the affordability crisis and this is why we have said he must go. Whatever happens in the coming byelection, Andy Burnham will need to make clear which version of him is going to show up. Is it the politician who has been part and parcel of the Labour establishment for decades, abstaining on legislation making brutal cuts to welfare, PFI and other Labour privatisations, or is it the one who has publicly supported proportional representation, been a popular Mayor in Manchester and expressed support to make changes to the failed economic model. The country needs to know if Andy Burnham is serious about breaking out from the terrible orthodoxies from the past, or if he will just be more of the same.”

@FrankFWJH F’ing stupidity! If they want to stop a reform government then they need to stand aside. They don’t have a hope in change to win here anyway, just split the vote which will help reform

Steve Wright, Fire Brigades Union, criticises Reform UK, "You've got Nigel Farage acting like he's the voice of the working class" "He's admitted to taking a £5,000,000 donation" "Richard Tice said he would attack our pensions, he would come for public sector pay, they would not invest in public services" "The only people who would benefit would be the billionaire class" "And it's quite rich of Danny Kruger to say that a Reform government would be able to fix the crisis that we see now" "None of them are talking about the cost of living crisis, about public services that have been decimated after 14 years of austerity" "None of them are talking about inequality that exists" "That's why people have gone out and voted the way they do because Keir Starmer has no delivered on that"

We must respond to the message that voters have sent us and break with the status quo once and for all. We must confront the big challenges the public face with real answers. That is how we will deliver the change that people are desperate for and build a stronger and fairer country. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

The world is in a turbulent place so any transition of power should be orderly, and should facilitate voices from across our movement to chart the course for what we do next. That must include giving @AndyBurnhamGM the opportunity to re-enter parliament if an opportunity arises.

This set of local election results are devastating for the Labour Party. Councillors and candidates have worked extremely hard in difficult circumstances, but have lost as a result of factors outside of their control. 🧵

The election results today have clearly been tough for Labour. I’m sorry that we’ve lost so many brilliant Labour colleagues across the country, and thank them for their service. And I’m sorry that so many voters felt unable to vote Labour at these elections. @Keir_Starmer has taken responsibility and committed all of us to delivering on the mandate the country gave us at the last election. The Labour Party shouldn’t waste a minute of the time we’ve been given to get on with that job. If we turn inwards the public will think we’re walking away from that challenge. The next election will have unity or division on the ballot. A Britain built for all, or a Britain for the few. Britain is at its best when we come together and rise to the challenges of our time. And Labour is at its best when our values of equality, collectivism and unity power our project for the British people. We can deliver a better Britain in the years ahead and beat the prospect of division at the next election, but only if we come together, get on with the job and face the future.

These are tough election results for Labour and I’m sorry to all of those colleagues who have lost their seats. Keir Starmer won a mandate to change our country. We must get on with delivering that mandate - and show how politics can improve people’s lives for the better.

I’m gutted by the results in Wales and across the country. We have to do some real soul searching to drive forward the kind of change our country so obviously desperately wants and needs. The PM is right these are areally tough set of results for Labour.
