Housing costs make up much of our cost of living & rising mortgage costs will worsen the housing affordability crisis. Many policies have been tried to deal with the crisis, but most are ineffective. In this CentrePiece we explain why: cep.lse.ac.uk/pubs/download/… @CEP_LSE @LSEnews

Thrilled to be a co-recipient of the UEA Student Prize in Montréal! Thanks to @Ahlfeldt, @ChrisALHilber, the @LSEGeography faculty, and the @UrbanEconomics organisers. My JMP explores the impacts of London's Protected Vistas on heights, prices, and welfare (new draft coming soon)

Housing in the UK has become unaffordable & this is worsening, with younger people being hit the hardest. Reforms that could be effective are considered politically infeasible – while popular policies are ineffective or, worse, counterproductive buff.ly/3REFir5

@Ahlfeldt @MilenaAlmagro There has been an attempt by Marcato & Tong (2023, JREFE) to estimate the office supply elasticity, but have not read the paper, so can’t comment on whether these estimates are well identified/reliable. Estimating supply price elasticities for commercial space is tricky.

@MilenaAlmagro if they exist, @ChrisALHilber will know (given that the cost of height is somewhat smaller for commercial buildings, the supply price elasticity should be slightly larger, I guess)

Any good reference of ***commercial*** real estate supply elasticities? Similar to Saiz (2010) or Baum-Snow and Han (2022)?
