🚨 NEW BOOK 🚨 My latest book, Gary Lineker: A Portrait of a Football Icon, is out on 30th January. It's the first Lineker biog in 30 years, tracing his story from Leicester market to the man he is today - including accounts from the people who were there with him. Check it out!

As Graham Potter aims to lead Sweden to the World Cup, he'll be following in the footsteps of another Englishman who won Olympic gold and reached a World Cup final while in the job. Yet nobody knows much about George Raynor. My piece on @guardian_sport theguardian.com/football/the-s…

Great to get under the skin of Hearts' title bid, chatting to @sked21 @Amoruso1998 and record appearance maker Gary Mackay. This isn't purely an underdog story, this a league challenge that investor Tony Bloom called before the season started... 👀
FourFourTwo@FourFourTwo

💰 Billionaire professional gambler turned football club owner Tony Bloom is defying the odds once again 👏 Known for taking Brighton to the Premier League, Bloom has also helped Belgian club Union Saint-Gilloise go from the second division to the Champions League 🔮 But, what he's doing with Hearts may be his greatest achievement yet - and he even predicted it at the start of the season 💻 Having invested in the Scottish Premiership club, Bloom has instituted a data-led approach to manager appointments and player recruitment 🌍 Hearts have signed key men from all over the world, buying players from Slovakia's top flight and Norway's second tier 🫢 At the beginning of 2025/26, Bloom boldly stated that he believed Hearts could compete with Rangers and Celtic 🚫 No club outside of the Old Firm has won the Scottish Premiership since Aberdeen in 1986. Rarely do any other teams come close 🏁 So, for Hearts to be top of the pile heading into the final straight, it's a fascinating story and directly linked to Bloom's influence 🔜 During a season in which Rangers and Celtic have each had their own issues to deal with, Hearts have capitalised and are genuine title contenders with only two months of the season remaining 📚 READ THE FULL STORY HERE: fourfourtwo.visitlink.me/JyOALA

Taking wildcards or leaving out stars - there are several big decisions when it comes to fixing up a World Cup squad. But not every manager gets those calls right. My piece for @BBCSport bbc.co.uk/sport/football…

It's almost as though Arteta suffers from imposter syndrome in the biggest moments. Always expecting something to go wrong to a point that he doesn't quite trust himself or his team. It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy that Arsenal inevitably fall short.

Rubén Amorim has managed Manchester United in 28 matches against current Premier League teams. He has overseen 4 wins. A win percentage rate under 14.5 percent. 2 of those wins came in his first month in charge.

Graham Potter has never been a fast starter in the Premier League. In his first 19 league matches as Brighton boss (where he was a success), they won 20 points, which is the same record he currently has at West Ham. But now he's had a full summer, that record needs to pick up.

Will Still holds the record for the longest unbeaten start by a manager in Ligue 1 history after going 17 matches without defeat as Reims boss (only Tito Vilanova managed longer in the top five European leagues this century). Maybe that #SaintsFC late show was inevitable today.

Happy to concede I loved Southgate and was blinded by the good bits of his tenure, but it feels like we have thrown semi-finals and finals away for a gun-for-hire short-term tactician who isn't going to get anywhere near enough time to implement any of this effectively.

This all may be true (apart from the forgetting Capello bit), but achieving as a club manager is a different ball game to doing internationally. Tuchel may eventually master this too, but needs to achieve his tactical vision in far less time than a club manager is able to.

A real shame Gary Lineker's time at the BBC looks set to end in this way, although perhaps inevitable he would eventually leave under a cloud. Despite this, he should still be considered one of the BBC's best ever broadcasters, somebody who learned - then reinvented - his craft

Lineker's media career has been so carefully curated, even his exit has a sense of control to it - although this latest controversy was a rare misstep. He'll go out raising an issue he feels strongly about. Agree or disagree, that freedom of expression is important to maintain.

He was the first to admit he wasn't a natural presenter when he first stepped in front of the camera, but Lineker mastered the art. Much like his playing career, he worked incredibly hard on honing his talents to become the best in the business - to the BBC's benefit for so long.
