@ArtAcevedo @Morning_Joe Spot on! In every of my monthly meetings in southwest Houston, never once did I hear we were policing too much. Neighbors always asked for more officers and more visibility.

Interesting discussion on policing on @Morning_Joe. Having served in multiple communities, I can say my experience has been that the communities most impacted by crime are disproportionately poor communities and communities of color. These communities consistently made it clear they didn’t want less police; they want better policing and increased community safety. #RelationalPolicing

Cool new study from our @UofSC team in partnership with @ColumbiaPDSC. What happens when you use code enforcement enforcement to address environmental disorder (abate empty lots, buildings, landscapes, etc.), for 90 days? Property crime decreases, with no effects on violent crime. Interesting implications for crime control strategies without impacting patrol operations! Congrats to Hunter Boehme, Brandon Tregle, Marc Olson, and Cannon Fulmer on the new paper.

And there it is. Forrest Whitley has been traded to the Rays for cash considerations. End of an era.

A little bit of personal/professional news: I'm thrilled to be the next @StwOKPolice Chief of Police. I've met so many amazing people and developed lifelong friendships in the @houstonpolice but I'm excited for a new challenge and new partnerships.

Thankful for the chance to present at the @CPAC sidebar today on real solutions to violent crime. For those surprised: Beyond the hoopla and spectacles often covered, there are genuine, real conversations between pragmatic, compassionate, and solutions-oriented people looking for bipartisan ways (yes, bipartisan) to make our communities safer and more just through criminal justice and public safety reforms. There’s a lot to be done. Let’s roll up our sleeves. For those interested in what I said, in short: There is much we can do on solving more violent crimes, better data collection on crime and policing, deterring violent crimes through more & better policing, and preventing violence through evidence-backed social interventions like summer jobs, CBT programs, and mitigating lead exposure.
