@ProfTonyPollard Another one I enjoy revisiting is The Rise and Fall of the Trigan Empire. Appeared in “Look & Learn”. Picked up five compilation volumes a few years ago. Great escapism!

Remember Warlord? Got distracted today with wee war comic project. This weekly comic first hit newsagents on 28 Sept 1974, when I was 10. It launched some iconic characters but also a bunch of secret agents. It was an act of marketing genius which went live with issue 20 on 8 Feb 1975. I ran a ring of agents which met in a furniture shop on a Saturday. Were you an agent?

@SommePhantom @mbtrle Our personal experience will always colour our views of schools. Most of the staff I met were aware of the “politics”, but this was usually to ensure their department or school got a good deal. The most animated discussions I witnessed in staff rooms were about football!

@ChrisMackay16 @mbtrle Perhaps I should further explain that I experienced secondary school in a Scottish "High" & an English "Comprehensive". One was a disciplined learning environment & the other was bedlam, - a complete & utter shambles. Guess which was which🤔

@SommePhantom @mbtrle Teaching can be a lot more difficult and stressful than it appears! Strange as it may appear, teachers do gather life/ work experience as they progress. Nobody starts with it.

@mbtrle Correct. Same with teaching. Go to primary school > secondary school > university > post-grad teacher training > get a job as a teacher. Life / work experience - nil😧

@Balkan_Dave Might have been one of the Spanish refugees that arrived in Britain and joined the army after Franco’s victory.

@ProfTonyPollard Both are incredible pieces of work considering the budgets involved. Used them in the classroom and they certainly kept the attention of the pupils. Being B&W added to the effect.

Peter Watkins gone. He was a hugely important filmmaker. Best known for The War Game but his 1964 Culloden film still influences way history TV is made today. It’s not perfect but it’s amazing and on YouTube as a good print. Watch it in his honour! youtu.be/-1TZq6DfKKA?si…

@simonharley Great viewing. Some of the Czechoslovakian scenes were filmed in Glasgow. One of them was on the red ash football pitches that used to be outside Hampden Park.

Re-watching the classic that is Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, and I've just noticed that Cambridge Circus was actually a circus back in the 1970s, complete with underground toilets by the look of things.

@ProfTonyPollard Currently cruising in the Mediterranean. Just passed Minorca and retold the sad story of Admiral Byng to my wife. She doesn’t share my enthusiasm for these small moments! However, she is encouraging me to think about a masters in war studies at Glasgow. She has her reasons!

Hasn't changed my mind about retiring but... "I am _____ from your Islands at War course. I just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the class - it was truly my favourite course throughout my 4 yrs at uni. I learned so much, & it really stayed with me long after the lectures ended."

37 years after I began my teaching career, today will be my last day in the classroom. Retirement beckons. It will be a bit weird as I have spent more than half my life as a History Teacher, the last 30 as a Head of Department. However- looking forward to new opportunities!

@mcribbHistory Moore received the pistols when he was on a Grand Tour. He would have been 11/12 years old at the time. Not surprisingly, he began examining them. One of the pistols went off wounding a maid in the next room. I believe she survived with a sore arm. I would blame his parents!

@ChrisMackay16 He may have accidentally shot a maid with them? Poor trigger discipline? A poor aim? Or a negligent discharge?! Something ironic about them being on display in the school!

Fought #OnThisDay 16 Jan 1809 The Battle of Corunna was fought. Having arrived at the port, the bedraggled British force turned against their pursuers & pushed them back, so they could evacuate. Winning a vital victory but lost 900 men including their commander, Sir John Moore.

@mcribbHistory A pair of pistols that are believed to have been presented to Sir John Moore by the Earl Marischal. They are on display at the High School of Glasgow. He may have accidentally shot a maid with them!

Sir John Moore was fatally wounded leading his troops. Born 17 November 1761 he was buried in the ramparts of Corunna; 'Not a drum was heard, not a funeral note, As his corse to the rampart we hurried; Not a soldier discharged his farewell shot O’er the grave where our hero we buried.'
