16 years ago on Easter Sunday, one of the biggest trades in Eagles history went down as Donovan McNabb was dealt.
Not only was it a franchise QB, but he was sent in-division to Washington, guaranteeing two matchups a year.
The return: the 37th overall pick (used on S Nate Allen) and a future 3rd.
McNabb was coming off a solid 2009 (3,553 yards, 22 TDs) but struggled in back-to-back losses to Dallas to end the season.
The trade didn’t really work out for anyone involved. The plan was to hand things to Kevin Kolb, but he got hurt in the 2010 opener, opening the door for Michael Vick, who went on to have one of the best seasons of his career.
Meanwhile, McNabb had one of his worst years in Washington (14 TDs, 15 INTs, multiple benchings), and was traded again after the season. He played just one more year in Minnesota before retiring.
Looking back, with Shady, Maclin and DeSean all starting to emerge, should the Eagles have held onto McNabb and see what he could have done with those young weapons or did the Eagles get out at the right time?

One of the best Eagles draft stories came in 2010. The Eagles started with pick No. 24 but traded up to No. 13, and everyone expected Texas safety Earl Thomas with the void left after Brian Dawkins. The pick came in….and it was Michigan DE Brandon Graham. Thomas went the very next pick to Seattle, and the Giants followed by taking Jason Pierre-Paul. From that point on, all three careers were tied together and early on, it looked like the Eagles got the worst of it. Graham had just 3 sacks in his first two seasons while battling a serious knee injury, while Thomas made five Pro Bowls in his first six years and JPP broke out with a 16.5 sack season in Year 2. But the story didn’t end there. Graham battled back, became a career Eagle, set records, and delivered one of the biggest plays in Super Bowl history for the franchise, going from “bust” talk to legend status. All three had great careers, but it’s fair to say it worked out best for the Eagles and a reminder that it’s way too early to call any rookie a bust.
