I second Yasmin. Nothing would be better for America, its writers, and our literature than UBI. Soon enough we would all love (and rely on) it. In the meantime higher word rates, please.

Rather than engage in discursive modes of means testing (to borrow from @xlorentzen), we should think of how to make writing a well-paid profession for everyone. Instead, writers are spiteful gatekeepes. Ireland (UBI) seems the only way out. American writers would hate it.
