When I ask a question in front of a class and it's silent, it can mean many things, so I follow it up with questions like "Are we quiet because we're too shy, because we don't know, or because we need more time to think?"

10/10 recommend finishing #aplang year with “What sparks joy” presentations. This grown up version of show and tell is awesome. For 3 days I watch Ss light up as they explain joy.
