Why exactly are people hating the Afrikaans language? Is it because they don't know or don't understand how it changed or why it changed from dutch to being a language on its own? Or do they hate that Afrikaans is the true meaning of Ubunthu

@DURITZ79 @b_shaum Is this is the ‘homework’ you’re referring to? ling-app.com/tips/youngest-… There are a number of problems in this blog, like the ‘fact’ that Afrikaans is unique because it’s a pidgin. Linguists can’t even agree on what a language is, never mind when one is ‘born’.

@DURITZ79 @b_shaum I would not say it’s the youngest language - how would you determine that? (I love Afrikaans, just not sure of that claim.)

@b_shaum Afrikaans is the youngest language in the world and borrowed a lot of words from other local languages to make it proudly South African. En hy vloek ook lekker.

@notababelaas2 Left @ 8, hoping there’d be enough time for a 9.30 meeting in CT. From Sset West to the Jakes Gerwel turn-off, the time remaining for the trip (on navi) never went under 50 mins. JUST made it. Coming back, road works on the N2. Why???? Can’t this type of work be done at night?

@LanguageCrawler Interesting. Although some of this makes sense at an intuitive level, I would like to know how the authors got their data. Surveys?

This chart supposedly shows the 3rd most spoken language in each country (I'm guessing not including English, but I'm still skeptical about it's accuracy). Larger zoomable image: reddit.com/media?url=http… It's still interesting to read about some of these languages (see replies)

"Veilig en effektief" Maar ons hoor van al hoe meer onverklaarbare sterftes. Ek praat daagliks met mense wat nie meer dieselfde is na die inspuiting nie maar te bang is om publiek te gaan. Dokters is te bang om dit te diagnoseer. Wanneer gaan daar n ondersoek kom?

@LBFlyawayhome Isn’t this pretty standard for the time? Even during the Victorian period rhymes were meant to teach certain behaviours. Think of the various versions of ‘Struwelpeter’, and about the boy who wouldn’t eat his soup, with an illustration of his grave to drive the point home. 🫣

@culturaltutor I’ve ALWAYS loved this cathedral, especially the simplicity of the chandelier and the ‘throne’.

10. Odo of Metz One of history's most important architects. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire architecture in northern Europe essentially faded away. Until Odo designed the Palatine Chapel, now part of Aachen Cathedral in Germany, for Charlemagne in the 9th century.

A small number of famous architects tend to get all the attention, so here are 12 brilliant architects you probably haven't heard of, from Medieval Azerbaijan to 19th century Finland:

The list goes on, from Maputo Central and Soarano Station to São Paulo's Luz Station and Madrid Atocha. Train stations represent the perfect union of architecture, engineering, and public interest; there's surely a great deal we could learn today from this rich, global heritage.

On this day 197 years ago the world's first ever public railway was opened in northern England. And a whole new form of architecture was born: the train station. So, to celebrate, here are some of the world's greatest train stations...

@gustav__muller Not sure you can anticipate this but you can respond well. We were warned on Friday and again yesterday morning. Standby teams were organized. Road repair vehicles have been on the streets all day. It’s the speed of the response and the communication that impresses me. #CapeStorm

@chillpep Actually only one small area, Bikini Beach, was affected. It was bad yes, but the main Gordon’s Bay beach, harbour and beaches all along the estates up to Strand are fine.
