@synaptikate Ooh these are great ideas! Love the idea for centrifuge balance charts-- great for a newbie. We have a semi-onbarding doc to share too, I should print it 🌟

@ChristiBink print-out chart for balancing the centrifuge? highlighters/sharpies, sticky notes/flag tags, binder for protocols if needed, etc I made an "onboarding" doc for new lab members in our group that gives them info on how to access everything, it's usually helpful!

Today’s accomplishment: converting our water bath area into a nice clean bench for a visiting summer student! Any pro tips on friendly and helpful things to set out on an incoming student’s bench? I’m thinking a calculator, and more colors of sharpies…

a white scholar in my field is married to a person of color, took his last name, & is now one of the leading scholars in Latinx studies. once, she applied for & got an opportunity typically reserved for POC. white people need to talk about this so the burden isn't on POC to do so

I gave a presentation today for the FIRST time since the pandemic started, almost exactly 3 years ago. Absolutely wild 🤯 Really enjoyed being back in person + in my groove again. I don't think I every truly learned how to be a virtual learner, because it never felt like this!

New favorite opening line I've seen in a paper's abstract: "Once described as mere “bags of enzymes,” bacterial cells are infact highly organized, with many macromolecules exhibiting non-uniform localization patterns." Thank you, Ladouceur AM et al., 2020 PNAS 117(31)

The bus driver this morning wished every single person a happy thanksgiving as they got off, and he friendly-honked and waved at every single other bus we passed along our route. This driver is single-handedly carrying my mental health today >>>

@jacasiegel Very impressed you have the self control to only spend $17 at Target. Perhaps an equally unforgettable moment 😂

I will never forget the moment that I found out that I had gotten into my first PhD program. I was at Target, checking out, when I saw the acceptance email on my phone. Shocked, I told the cashier, “I just got into a PhD program!” She responded, “Okay? That will be $17.23.” ❤️

Just found the most chaotic entry in my lab notebook, which consists of the following: "I think I ran the protein off the gel LOL" "I didn't image it b/c I was angry" "I can't see the protein (WTF right)" ***two days later*** "LOOK YAY I SEE IT" 😂

Very proud of my lab mate on her publication!! Learn about nucleoprotein filaments and how they can regulate virulence genes with the help of transcription factor RfaH in uropathogenic e. coli (the bacteria that cause UTIs)!! 🦠
Christine Hustmyer@cmhustmyer

Thrilled to share that my first-author paper is published! These results stem from a 3-year collaboration between @UWBiochem and @UWMadisonMMI. We show that elongation factor RfaH counter-silences H-NS filaments in vivo in uropathogenic E. coli (1/n) journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/mb…

My grad program is hosting virtual open houses on 10/11 and 11/7 for prospective students! I would re-choose CMB over and over again. I can't speak highly enough of how well-run, accommodating, and supportive the program is. Grad school is a struggle but CMB makes it better.
UW-Madison CMB@CMB_UWMadison

Join the CMB program in one of our virtual open houses this fall! You’ll hear from the CMB Chair and current students, learn about the application process and more! Details and the Zoom link are available on our website: cmb.wisc.edu/admissions/
