Freedom of the press is vital to a functioning and informed democracy. Around the world today, journalism and journalists are under attack, both politically and violently.
Journalists are the truth tellers, and when they are targeted in wars it is often because the perpetrators of violence want silence, complacency, and secrecy.
Here in Ontario, the Ford government has deliberately and legislatively eroded the freedom of the press through their FOI changes and the Premier’s reluctance to face scrutiny.
On World Press Freedom Day we stand with the brave journalists around the globe who risk and commit their lives to the pursuit of truth and transparency.

#BREAKING: I've written to Prime Minister Mark Carney, urging him to intervene to stop Doug Ford's Toronto Islands land grab.
While emergency rooms close, grocery prices go up, and workers lose their jobs, Doug Ford’s obsession with Toronto is costing the province.
The federal government can end this today.

@CTVNews Let's send more money out of the country. That will help for sure!

I heard this quote today and wanted to share it, because it gets to the core of what holds a society together and helps explain why things feel so upside down right now:
“There can be no greater indication of the decay in rule of law than a docile Bar, a subservient judiciary, and a society with a choked conscience.” - H. R. Khanna
Explained in parts:
“Docile Bar” — When lawyers stop challenging power, stop advancing difficult arguments, and become cautious instead of principled advocates, access to justice erodes.
“Subservient Judiciary” — When courts defer rather than scrutinize, or allow external pressure to influence outcomes, the rule of law becomes conditional instead of constant.
“Society with a Choked Conscience” — When people stay silent, disengaged, or afraid to question authority, even obvious concerns go unaddressed.
This is why things feel upside down to me: those meant to check power failed to challenge it, and what should have been challenged became accepted, so citizens start to lose any sense that speaking up matters.
Over the past few years, the legal profession has been a profound disappointment. Instead of educating and elevating the public conversation, too many capitulated to the same ideological and political divides fracturing society.
What is it that lawyers are so afraid of, anyways? The whole point of the profession is to test power, advance difficult arguments, and stand between the individual and the state, especially when it is uncomfortable.
I went into law to understand the system, to avoid being taken advantage of, and to challenge it, especially on behalf of the more vulnerable in society. That is the role. That is the responsibility. That is what made this profession unique to me. But instead of standing up, too many chose to step aside.
If lawyers won’t push back and citizens can’t speak, what exactly are we protecting?
And if we don’t have the courage to question and challenge, both as lawyers and as citizens, then what does any of it actually stand for?

@liberal_party We did this to ourselves. I don't blame Carney. I blame every single Canadian who allowed themselves to by into fear and manipulation. Our country is being destroyed, by this 11 year old, corrupt Liberal government.
11 years. Everything is worse!

I welcome the appointment of Annette Ryan as Canada’s new Parliamentary Budget Officer.
With more than 25 years of experience in economic analysis, fiscal policy, taxation, and public finance, Ms. Ryan will provide the rigorous, independent analysis that parliamentarians need to hold the government accountable and safeguard Canada’s public finances.
