A decade ago I had a disagreement with Stephen Few about the accuracy of graphical encoding. I argued then, and still do, that there are many situations in real life where decoding process behavior is more important than its accurate representation. This is one of those cases.

A chart and a piece of communication are not always the same thing: think about how people will read and interpret a chart. Spend less time thinking about methods to smooth a line, and more on how our design changes impact a reader's takeaways. @jburnmurdoch #outlier2023
