Not everyone will agree but... Social media needs to shut down for a year or two so people can go back to being themselves again… 🙌

I find Stephen King repulsive. But I am concerned at this response, along with the campaign to remove or even expel George Abaraonye, Oxford Union president elect. You may find their speech highly offensive, as I do. But it is not unlawful. Please, let’s not use leftist woke tactics and start cancelling or boycotting people. Draw attention to their comments yes, but let people decide whether to democratically remove him, or whether to buy the books.

Today is one of those days where I’m thankful I didn’t marry someone brainwashed by social media into justifying murder. Cause a lot of my friends didn’t escape that.

So, at a lot of universities there is moderate pressure on instructors to experiment with AI themselves, not just come up with student use guidelines. So after a summer of experimenting, I’ve found one consistent use case. Feed my lecture notes and slides into one of the LLMs and ask it to summarize the key concepts and come up with midterm short answer and multi choice multi select midterm questions. Although there is not a single midterm question that is usable without correction, and key concepts are always slightly off. It does often show me where my slides and lecture notes could be clearer (cause it gets things wrong). It’s like having a slightly below average intelligence focus group to pre-vet your slides. Are these sort of small ball efficiencies worth the massive build out? Probably not. To justify the buildout and potential negative externalities in a laissez-innovation course we are on, we’re gonna need to see some bigger improvements and LLMs seem to be hitting a wall. But from my tinkering I can tell you already what harried adjunct professors teaching 6 course a semester are gonna do, they’re gonna use it to create slides and notes, summarize books and articles, and even grade student papers. It’s gonna do a passable job, but everything is gonna be riddled with small and subtle errors that degrade instruction. Not in a way that really shows up at the lower levels of Blooms Taxonomy but becomes catastrophic at the higher levels.
