Whitehaven Rugby League are today delighted to announce the appointment of Anthony Murray as head coach on a three year deal as we look ahead to the 2025 Betfred League 1 season.  Murray (47) will take charge at The Ortus Rec for the next three seasons as the club enters a period of re-building following our relegation from the Betfred Championship confirmed last weekend. With coaching experience at Millom, Barrow Raiders, North Wales Crusaders and Workington Town Murray has a wealth of knowledge about League 1 and will be joined by his assistant Neil “Gus” Frazer who returns to the club after two spells as a player first signing in December 1997 making 53 appearances scoring 21 tries and returning for a short spell making 6 appearances back in 2003 scoring 1 try in a 26-26 away draw vs Salford.  Speaking about being appointed Haven’s new head coach Murray spoke saying “What an opportunity to coach a great club that is steeped in history and tradition and I just can’t wait to get started. This is an opportunity for the club to re-build going down to League 1 and start with a realistic budget build with some local players and help in this re-build of Whitehaven Rugby League.” “I’ve spent a big part of my career in Cumbria…. It’s a place that’s really close to my heart. It’s the heartland of Rugby, I love the people up here and what they stand for. They get behind their club and they are very passionate.” Speaking on the appointment of Murray the board of directors said “The BoD are excited to announce the signing of Anthony. After sitting down and outlining our plans with him it was clear he was the coach to help us deliver them. His professionalism is second to none the work he’s already put in has been outstanding, and his knowledge of the local amateur scene was impressive.
